Q: Every time I try to connect to the Internet, the "save password" option is
grayed out. How can I fix this?
A: The Client for Microsoft Networks feature is not installed. Go into
Control Panels: Network: Clients. Check to see if Client for Microsoft Networks
is installed. There is also an article on Microsoft's knowledge base, ID# Q137361.
Q: When I click on a File Folder, it goes into "find" mode instead of opening
the folder, but when I right-click on the folder and select Open, it works. What
gives?
A: Your Folder options are set up improperly. In a File menu, select View and
choose Folder Options: File Types. Then double-click on File Folder, one of the
Registered File Types. The Find option is likely selected as the Action. Simply
deselect Find and it should work fine.
Q: When I turned my computer on today, none of the icons look right. They're
all screwed up. The files open OK, but they just look different.
A: In Windows, there's a program called TweakUI. This utility will rebuild
all of your icons so that they are restored. You can get this program free on the
Windows 98 CD-ROM or you may also try downloading it.
Mac users: Rebuild the desktop. When you are booting up, hold down the
Command and Option keys until you are prompted to rebuild the desktop.
Q: I have DSL Internet access with an internal DSL modem. How can I set up a
second PC in my home office to access the Internet through this PC?
A: First, the host PC with the DSL modem must have Windows 98 SE. This OS has
the Internet Connection Sharing feature.
Second, you'll need to install a network card in each PC. Next, you'll need
to connect each PC to each other using a crossover cable. You can purchase this
at most computer stores.Then:
Make your connection on your host/server PC and give it an IP in TCP/IP of
192.168.0.1/Subnet 255.255.255.0 (you do this by right clicking on Network
Neighborhood and then double clicking on TCP/IP).
Then go to your remote PC and get into TCP/IP on it and set the IP to be
192.168.0.2/Subnet 255.255.255.0, set the gateway to 192.168.0.1 and then plug in
your DNS entries that your ISP has given you into the next tab.
Reboot the server PC and connect to the Internet and then reboot the remote
and you're in business.
In Netscape, make sure you go into the Preference/Proxy setup and set
your proxy settings to your gateway of 192.168.0.1 on your remote PC.
Q: My Toshiba laptop locked up. I hit the power button, but that only put the
laptop in suspend mode. How can I reset the laptop?
A: On most Toshiba laptops, there is a small hole near the power button. This
is for the reset button. If you take the end of a paper clip and press the reset
button, it will take the computer out of suspend mode.
Q: I have Windows 98 on my computer and it always hangs on shutdown. I have
to manually shut down. Other than that, it works fine. What can I do?
A: This is a common problem for which you can easily get a patch from
Microsoft. In Internet Explorer under the Tools menu, select Windows Update and
it will download not only this fix, but several others, too. We recommend that
you check this site once a month for updates.
