Maxum Development Corp. released another update to Rumpus, an FTP server developed exclusively for the Mac OS. The new version includes both Carbon and Classic versions, allowing users to run any modern version of the Mac OS. Rumpus will now notify administrators when new files are uploaded to the server, either via e-mail or by other action, such as executing an AppleScript. New security features will allow administrators to limit access to individual folders; updates have been installed to prevent known denial-of-service attacks, and encryption keys can be selected for users to secure data. User access standards also have been enhanced so that transfer rates and bandwidth use can be restricted. Download the free demo from Maxum's site.
Macromedia has released an update for its Shockwave & Flash Player. Shockwave Player Version 8.5.325 (which includes Macromedia Flash Player) will allow you to view Web content created with the latest version of Macromedia Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio, as well as all Shockwave content created on earlier versions. The Shockwave player enables you to play interactive 3D games and demos and view animated interfaces, streaming audio, and instructional presentations. Microsoft's new version of its popular e-mail client Outlook Express is now available as a free download. Outlook Express 5.0.3 lets you preview incoming messages, integrate mail with newsgroups, customize your toolbar, and more. The new release also includes new-message notification; support for SMTP authentication, making it possible to send messages securely; and IMAP4 support, which lets you access mail from different locations and desktops. Thursby Software Systems has a handy cross-platform networking program--called Dave--that allows Mac users to share files and printers with users of Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows for Workgroups computers. Dave, designed specifically for the Macintosh, uses the TCP/IP protocol, so you can use it over the Internet regardless of your location. Dave also lets you use shared directories and manipulate files directly over the network without having to download or copy files to a local drive. Other features include unlimited network size, large file support (up to 2GB), automatic workgroup detection, and even inkjet support for Mac OS X users. Ambar Software's Okidoki Guard is a simple program that lets you password-protect your computer. Just set your password and reboot your Mac to install the program in your computer's system folder. You can uninstall the program simply by clicking the Uninstall button in the set-up window. Okidoki Guard records failed attempts to log on to your computer, and it will shut down your machine if there are three failed attempts to log on, or if someone attempts to force-quit the program. This new release includes stability and bug fixes improved from previous versions. The program requires a $5.00 registration fee, and you can register at Ambar's site.
