Pop the pop-ups

In the continuing battle against pop-up ads, Web surfers need all the help they can get. High-Density Software has released version 2 of PopNot--touted as an intelligent pop-up killer. The program can discern between solicited and unsolicited pop-ups, and will keep a log of which pop-ups it has killed and from which Web sites they originated. The program also has a rules editor so that users can specify some Web sites from which pop-ups can be allowed, and others that should always be avoided. Options include visual/audio alerts when a pop-up is blocked and the ability to prevent browser windows from turning into full screen mode. PopNot comes with a 15-day trial period, and runs $19.95 for a full version.

B&P Technologies now offers APrintDirect version 4, a utility that gives users an easy way to create a catalog list of files and folders on any PC hard drive. The utility's interface allows a user to choose up to 11 different property fields, as well as seven different listing attributes. Requested information can be displayed in three different output styles--tree view, standard listing, and comma-separated--and can be displayed onscreen, printed, or saved as a text file. A trial version is operational for 21 days. Regular price for APrintDirect is $14.

IE Booster 1.4 by Paessler GmbH is a freeware program compatible with Internet Explorer (version 5 and higher) that provides a new range of utilities for Web browsers and gives users a wider variety of possible functions. IE Booster allows users to view page source information. It also lists all the images and hyperlinks on a Web site, and can show detailed information about specific images. In addition, the program can resize a browser window to various screen formats, copy a selection as plain text, and open selected text as a URL in a new browser window.

If business users are tired of using virtual private networks or a dedicated remote access server in order to access files on their PC or networked drive, 01 Communique may be the answer. In addition to accessing files, I'm InTouch integrates with Outlook and Outlook Express and does not require users to synchronize information once returning to their computer. The program has 128-bit, SSL-secured access to files. The company recently made available an upgraded version of its remote access software I'm InTouch. Version 3.03 now works with all versions of Windows XP. A 30-day version of the program can be downloaded from the company's Web site; users must pay a monthly ($9.95) or annual ($99.95) fee for continued use.
