Sony picks Portal Software platform

Cupertino-based Portal Software Inc. said Sony Pictures Digital Networks selected Portal's billing solution as a component of the company's digital platform.

The Portal product will be the underlying technology for pricing, billing, and subscriber and revenue management for Sony Pictures Digital Networks' business units including SoapCity and Screenblast.

Sony Pictures Digital Networks has launched two new subscription-based services, SoapCity DownloadTM and Screenblast.com's premium online creativity service.

Netopia buys Foster City firm

Broadband equipment maker Netopia Inc. of Emeryville acquired Foster City software firm JadeSail Systems Inc. in an all-stock deal worth approximately $1.3 million.

Netopia said the acquisition will strengthen its server software platform with the addition of JadeSail's provisioning and remote network management software.

Netopia will issue 160,000 shares to JadeSail's shareholders in exchange for all outstanding stock of JadeSail.

Micromuse buys Network Harmoni

San Francisco-based Micromuse Inc., a maker of business and service assurance software, acquired Network Harmoni (NHI), a San Diego-based software company, for approximately $23 million in cash.

The acquisition did not include any stock, debt, or earnout components. The acquisition culminates a business partnership that began in April 2002, when Micromuse and NHI entered into an OEM reseller agreement.

Agenis Software raises $11.8 million

Walnut Creek startup Agenis Software has reportedly raised approximately $11.8 million in a third round of venture capital financing.

The company has earmarked the funds to grow sales and marketing, with an emphasis on European markets. The round was led by Constellation Ventures.

Agenis Software provides tools for the automated creation, deployment and real-time maintenance of software applications.

CRN Magazine lauds VMware executive

Palo Alto-based VMware Inc., a maker of virtual machine software for Intel-based systems, said Computer Reseller News (CRN) named Dr. Kieran Harty, EVP of engineering at VMware, one of the top innovators of the year.

Harty joined VMware in 1999 to lead the VMware engineering organization after the introduction of the company's first product, VMware Workstation. Since then, Harty has overseen the development of three breakthrough products, the most recent one being VMware Control Center.

Dolch partners with ClearSight Networks

Fremont-based Dolch, a maker of portable computer products, announced a partnership with ClearSight Networks, a leading provider of network monitoring and analysis tools for real-time application troubleshooting.

Dolch will provide its FlexPAC portable computer platforms for the ClearSight Analyzer, the ClearSight Gigabit Analyzer, and the ClearSight Analyzer 10/100 FD. The FlexPAC includes an Intel P4 - 2GHz processor, 40GB EIDE Hard Drive, 2GB System Memory, 16MB Video RAM, a 14-inch TFT Color Display and four open add-in expansion slots.

PeopleSoft begins layoffs

Pleasanton software giant PeopleSoft Inc. has begun laying off workers as part of a previously announced plan to reduce its workforce in order to deliver the cost savings promised to investors who backed the company's acquisition of J.D. Edwards & Co.

Most of the company's job cuts are being targeted at general and administrative jobs that overlap because of the acquisition.

Last month, PeopleSoft said it planned to fire between 750 and 1,000 workers--about 7 percent of its total workforce--in order to save as much as $207 million in 2004. Making the acquisition pay off is a key part of PeopleSoft's plan to fight a hostile takeover attempt by Oracle Corp.
