Texas firm acquires Spirian

Spirian, a Chicago operations management software company, was acquired by SecureInfo of San Antonio. The terms were not disclosed, but the buyer assumed a five-year lease on Spirian's office space in the NBC Tower and will retain a majority of the employees. Founded by Al Wasserberger in 1996, Spirian raised more than $20 million from a roster of impressive venture capitalists and strategic partner EDS Ventures. General counsel Vic Pascucci will manage Chicago operations and Wasserberger has left the company.

Evon joins IIT

Darcy Evon, former Chicago Sun-Times technology columnist, joined the Illinois Institute of Technology as executive director of corporate relations and interprofessional business development. She reports to Dennis Roberson, vice provost for new initiatives, and Pam Reardon, vice president of development. Evon's goal is to strengthen partnerships between IIT faculty and students and corporations looking for solutions to business and technical problems.

Dukane, DataVisual team up

Dukane Corp and DataVisual Marketing Inc. said that DataVisual will be the exclusive distributor of the Dukane products in Canada. DataVisual will sell directly to the Canadian AV dealers and directly handle their accounts thereby being able to complete transactions with Canadian currency. They will sell the Dukane line of data /video projectors, overhead projectors, cameras, visual presenters, and the Dukane Projection System, or the mobile presentation system that is cart-based. DataVisual Marketing is a Canadian representative/distributor for Audio-Visual products.

SPSS signs software rights deal

Chicago-based SPSS Inc., a maker of data-analyzing software, sold distribution rights for three of its scientific research products to California-based Systat Software Inc. in a deal worth at least $13 million. SPSS received $9 million from Systat, a unit of India's Cranes Software International Inc., when the deal closed Dec. 29. SPSS expects to receive the remaining $4 million later this year and in early 2005. Along with distribution rights for SPSS' Sigma-series analytic software, the acquisition includes the products' customers and personnel. Roughly 20 people work for the Sigma product line, and most are expected to join Systat, said Edward Hamburg, SPSS executive vice-president and chief financial officer.

Deere loses chief tech officer

David M. Purvis last month left his post as senior vice-president and chief technology officer at Deere & Co. to take a position as executive vice-president of worldwide design and engineering services with California-based Solectron Corp. The Moline-based farm equipment manufacturer hired Purvis in 2001 to be its first chief technology officer.

Logitech taps Participate

Participate Systems, the Chicago developer of software for online sales and support, has been named to host an online customer support forums for Logitech, the Fremont, Calif., manufacturer of computer peripherals. The forums will enable Logitech customers to discuss products and resolve problems. The forum will be searchable and Logitech plans to use it to development product enhancements. Logitech expects the forums will reduce calls to its helpline and also will help the company promote its new io Personal Digital Pens.

Verizon plans $3 billion in upgrades

Verizon Communications Inc. will spend $3 billion over the next two years to upgrade its wireless and wired networks to carry high-speed data.

Verizon will also introduce new technology to integrate cell phones, wired phones and Internet services onto a single device, providing a range of new features for consumer and business users. Verizon Wireless will offer mobile data services running at 300 to 500 kilobits per second to major markets including Chicago later this year. Business customers who use Verizon service in the Chicago area may be able to purchase wireless/wireline integration later this year. Consumers here will not be offered those services because Verizon currently does not offer wireline service in the Chicago area.
