World Wide Packets gains funding

A consortium of venture capitalists has poured $15.7 million into Spokane-based World Wide Packets Inc. The company enables the delivery of telephony, business and entertainment video, broadband data and Internet access services using Ethernet technology over fiber-optic networks and copper telephone lines.

World Wide Packets, which has raised a total of $115.7 million since its inception in 2000, will use most of the latest funding to bolster its network of distribution partners and resellers. World Wide Packets has developed a series of hardware devices and switches that aggregate and distribute large chunks of broadband data.

Mobliss sold to Japanese company

Seattle-based Mobliss Inc., which makes software that enables wireless carriers to deliver mobile entertainment data over high-speed wireless networks, has been sold to Index Corp. of Japan for about $15 million. Index will invest an undisclosed amount of money in Mobliss. Mobliss is an 18-employee startup begun in 2000. It provided some of the technology that allowed viewers of Fox-TV's "American Idol" to vote for their favorite contestant. Mobliss management, including CEO Brian Levin, will remain with the company.

WatchGuard Technologies CEO resigns

Jim Cady resigned Tuesday as chairman, president and CEO of WatchGuard Technologies Inc., a Seattle-based provider of Internet-security technology, the company announced. WatchGuard found an interim CEO in Steve Moore, a company founder, current director and former executive vice president.

Saflink buys security technology

Bellevue-based biometric security company Saflink Corp. will buy access-security technology from Information Systems Support Inc. and BioMetric Solutions Group Inc. for $4.1 million. Included in the acquisition is the hiring of personnel from the two companies to support the acquired technology and products. The purchase price includes $500,000 in cash and 1.12 million shares, which are locked up for three years after the acquisition closes.

The technology, which involves digital identity and biometric-enhanced physical access security, will be added to Saflink's computer network access technology to provide the company with a "doorway-to-desktop security solution," Saflink said.

Primus buys Amacis

Seattle-based software developer Primus Knowledge Solutions Inc. bought electronic-communications company Amacis Group Ltd. in a stock deal worth at least $7.5 million. Primus bought all of the shares in privately held Amacis for 1.2 million shares of Primus common stock. Primus also assumed Amacis's vested stock options, which equaled 265,327 vested stock options in Primus, the company said. Privately held Amacis is based in Boston and Belfast, Ireland, and the company develops electronic-communications products such as e-mail, secure messaging, instant messaging and Web forms. Primus makes software used by call centers, help desks and self-service Web sites. By acquiring Amacis, Primus will bring complementary e-mail and wireless technologies to its product lineup.

Ascentry signs security agreements

Tacoma-based software company Ascentry Technologies reached tentative agreements to work with government suppliers on security technology.

Privately held Ascentry makes software that lets government agencies exchange information with secure video, audio and data communications, particularly during emergencies. The company has tentative agreements to collaborate with such companies as Northrup Grumman IT, Siemens Transportation Systems, Telos Corp. and Fortress Technologies. The partners plan to develop security software for mass-transit, public-safety and building-services agencies.
