Foundation launches I.P. Site

The District-based Progress & Freedom Foundation's Center for the Study of Digital Property unveiled a new Web site, IPcentral.info, to provide experts and the public with information, resources, and perspective on issues of intellectual property in the Internet age. The purpose of IPcentral.info is to provide material useful to anyone interested in issues of intellectual property in the Internet Age.

TecAccess to address Web conference

Debra Ruh, president and founder of TecAccess, will present a workshop entitled "Developing Best Practices for Web Accessibility" at the 2004 Bringing Practical Solutions to Government Web Professionals Conference. Ruh will conduct the workshop on May 24 at George Mason University School of Public Policy in Arlington, Virginia.The course will provide an overview of creating accessible and Section 508-compliant Web site for everyone, including users with disabilities.

NetFrameworks debuts SpamMeter

McLean, Va.-based NetFrameworks Inc., an Internet consulting services firm, announced availability of its SpamMeter services. SpamMeter is designed to help companies reduce the amount of legitimate e-mail blocked or filtered by spam detection systems.

Access Systems relocates to Reston

Government IT contractor Access Systems, whose payroll tripled to more than 350 employees last year, has relocated its headquarters from Fairfax to Reston. The business has leased the ninth floor at the Plaza America campus, taking about 22,000 square feet. Access Systems, with customers that include cabinet level agencies and military branches, had $24 million in revenue last year and won more than $40 million in new contracts in 2003.

TrafficLand gets VC funding

Fairfax-based TrafficLand, whose Web site links public traffic cameras with traffic news and information, has received $600,000 in growth capital from District-based investment firm The Zitelman Group. The Zitelman Group president Rick Zitelman has also joined the TrafficLand board of directors. TrafficLand says it will use the cash infusion to support ongoing operations and product development and to hire additional workers. TrafficLand also provides video-based systems for emergency evacuation management and public awareness. It has also developed what it calls the nation's first video distribution system for first responders, and that system is currently available in the Washington area. TrafficLand says its Web site, with video and images from about 240 traffic cameras in Maryland, Virginia and the District, gets more than 400,000 hits per day.

Metastorm, Xlipstream team up

Two Columbia companies are joining to help companies translate and store proprietary data into the flexible computer language known as XML. Metastorm, which develops business process management software, will work to integrate XML-generation appliances made by Xlipstream Inc. into its products so that data can be converted to XML, then retrieved and deployed by Metastorm's software. XML, short for Extensible Markup Language, is considered a critical tool in helping companies managing data because it improves the functionality of Web-based applications by offering more flexible and adaptable ways to identify information.

Maryland, Virginia among strongest tech economies

Maryland and Virginia rank fourth and fifth, respectively, among the nation's strongest technology economies, according to a recent study. Massachusetts tops the list compiled by the Milken Institute, a California-based think tank. The report analyzes 75 indicators of technology strength to come up with its ranking of all 50 states. Those indicators are lumped into five categories: Research and development; entrepreneurial activity; education; talent, specifically the concentration of scientists and engineers; and the technology sector's prominence in the business community.
