ITEC returns to Seattle
Portland-based Centric Events Group announced the Keynote and sponsor line-up for ITEC's return to Seattle on June 8-9 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center. The Seattle ITEC is part of North America's largest series of regional business-to-business IT events. Returning after a hiatus of two years and a change in ownership, ITEC kicks off with an opening keynote from Robert McDowell, VP, Business Critical Solutions, Microsoft Corp. Second day Keynote presenter Frank Prestipino is VP of Global Enterprise Applications, Mid-Market for Oracle.
Cray receives X1 supercomputer order
Seattle-based Cray Inc. said it has received an order for one of its X1 supercomputers from Government Micro Resources Inc. of Virginia, which is installing the computer at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. NASA will use the computer in its Earth Sciences and Aeronautics Enterprise High End Computing partnership, a program involving NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, Ames Research Center, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
Birdstep updates RDM Mobile
Seattle-based Birdstep Technology released Birdstep RDM Mobile 3.0, a small-footprint database ideally suited for mobile computing systems. Mobile computing devices, including telematics, electronic notebooks, smart-phones, and aerospace systems require a high-performance database, but have limited resources. RDM Mobile 3.0 has been streamlined to minimize size Birdstep also said it has expanded its presence in the aerospace industry with The Boeing Company's recent purchase of RDM Embedded 7. Boeing will be using Birdstep's RDM Embedded database in their Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). The AWACS aircraft employs complex real-time avionic systems to meet the operational objectives of the AWACS' customers. The system responsiveness and reliability are important attributes of the AWACS avionics. All system components must ensure that the operational objectives are not compromised. Boeing selected RDM Embedded because it provides the performance required to ensure that the data, necessary for operation, is available when needed.
PhotoWorks releases digital photo organizing software
PhotoWorks Inc., a Seattle-based provider of photography services, released a new software suite that helps organize, enhance, share and print digital photos on their computers. The software, PhotoWorks Digital Partner, is downloadable for free. It works in tandem with PhotoWorks' paid online photo service, which offers professional finishing and printing of digital photography. Formerly Seattle FilmWorks, a photofinishing company used extensively by professional photographers, PhotoWorks recently shut down all of its retail locations to focus on its online photo-technology business. The publicly traded company had 35 retail stores at the end of 2000.
BioNet sells Net Nanny
Issaquah-based software maker BioNet Systems LLC has sold its Net Nanny line of software to LookSmart Ltd. of San Francisco for $5.3 million in stock and cash. Net Nanny is software designed for parents to control their children's Internet access. BioNet makes security software that can identify computer users by the way they type, using biometric technology. Company officials said they sold Net Nanny to concentrate on the biometric end of their business. Net Nanny had filed for bankruptcy in 2002 and its assets were then acquired by BioNet.
Korean Air signs up for Connexion Internet service
Korean Air has chosen Seattle-based Connexion by Boeing to provide in-flight Internet service for its airline passengers. Financial terms were not disclosed. Connexion, a division of The Boeing Co., will begin installing the service on Korean Air's long-haul fleet of 747s and 777s in early 2005, according to a statement. The service will be offered to passengers shortly thereafter. Connexion by Boeing also has agreements with Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines System, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Kingdom Holding Co., to equip their long-haul aircraft with the mobile connectivity service.
