DKS Systems
Developing better Web strategies.
Posted by : Nadine Cruit

There are a host of Web development companies in the current e-business landscape. Whether a company wants to build a simple site or launch an e-commerce initiative, all kinds of firms are eager to help. But Minneapolis-based DKS Systems prides itself on working just a little bit harder than the other guys. President Mike Sowada talks about principles, complexity, and watching evolution.

How did DKS Systems get started?

In my basement, surrounded by my farm of animals--two dogs, a cat, and a bunch of fish. As partners, Colin, Bob, and I wanted to start an Internet consulting company that was founded on the core principles of trust, integrity, honesty, and quality service. We believed that if we treated our employees as our most valuable resource, they would, in turn, treat our customers with that same respect.

Frankly, we were sick and tired of the numerous firms out there with big chips on their shoulders who treated their customers and employees as numbers rather than people.

What got you personally interested in doing this work?

First of all, you need to understand that I am a tech person at heart who somehow ended up with a tremendous interest in businesses. The Internet, and particularly e-commerce, married technology and business. It was the first time, in most companies, that an IT person or department was looked at as a competitive advantage.

How does the company distinguish itself in such a competitive climate?

We begin work with our clients knowing that no two organizations are the same. What one business may want to accomplish is most often completely different from what another business, non-profit organization, or government entity wants to accomplish. We believe no two web sites should be the same. We think we should fit into our clients' plans, they shouldn't be forced into ours.

It is our belief that utilizing the right technology, built by a skilled group of people, following a strict process; we will deliver to an Internet solution that will work for our clients.

Why do you feel there's a need for what you provide?

There are two reasons. The first is that, compared to the other Web development shops in town, we are among the most technically advanced. Because of this, we get a lot of business which other shops cannot handle due to the complexity of a particular site. Many times, the shops themselves farm it out to us to do it for them. The second reason is that high quality service is always in demand and always appreciated.

In this current economic climate, how is the company faring?

We are very busy. I am proud of the fact that in the last three years we have grown from three people to over 20. That's especially gratifying to know because during the same time period, our competition has done the reverse.

What do you like best about what you do?

I enjoy getting out and meeting with both our potential and current customers. For potential customers, I enjoy taking the time to learn about them and their businesses. Then, I always enjoy determining the best way we can assist them in achieving or exceeding their goals. For current customers, it is the joy of watch and facilitating their growth and evolution.
