Illinois school joins WebSurveyor program

Online survey provider WebSurveyor Corp. of Herndon, Va., said Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) joined WebSurveyor's Academic Grant Program. The program provides a renewable one-year product license for teaching and academic research to colleges and universities. Schools have unlimited access to the survey software, updates, and customer support that have a total commercial value of $250,000. WebSurveyor also said it recently won a Stevie Award from the American Business Awards. WebSurveyor 4.1 was named Best New Product within the computer software category.

Ferguson new Careerbuilder CEO

Online job recruiter Careerbuilder, owned in part by McLean, Va.-based Gannett, has promoted company president Matt Ferguson to chief executive. Ferguson will replace current CEO Bob Montgomery, who will serve as board chairman. Montgomery joined Careerbuilder two and a half years ago, when Careerbuilder acquired rival jobs site Headhunter.net, where Montgomery had been chief executive.

OMD Corp. picks Defywire

OMD Corp. of Jefferson, Mo., announced the use of Herndon, Va.-based Defywire's Mobility Suite as the wireless platform for OMD's Vision product suite. The Vision product suite is the leading business software product within the office equipment and dealer automation market. Applications within the Vision suite, such as sales and field service, will now be wirelessly enabled and accessible via PDAs and mobile phones. Defywire also said that Edward Peters joined its board of directors. Peters is president of DataDirect Technologies, an operating company of Progress Software Corp.

Canada grants patent to Xybernaut

Fairfax-based Xybernaut said the Canadian government granted it a patent on a wearable computer that's also a cell phone and a pager. The patent for the yet-unnamed product covers a core computer, a display and a communications module.

Dimension gains Cisco certification

Reston, Va.-based Dimension Data Holdings received certification from Cisco Systems for its Call Authorization and Tracking Tools (CATT) applications that help services organizations track project-related expenses and control telephony costs. The recognition of Dimension Data telephony applications by Cisco Systems means that CATT is now a Cisco Verified Product for its Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data (AVVID) platform.

Orkand Corp. sold to Florida company

Falls Church-based IT contractor Orkand Corp. was sold to Harris Corp., a Florida-based maker of communications equipment, for $66 million in cash.

Privately held Orkand has more than 1,000 employees in 22 states, and works as a prime contractor on a number of government technology contracts. Its federal customers include the departments of state, labor, interior and health and human services and the postal service. Orkand's annual revenue is about $80 million. Harris said Orkand will become part of its technical services division.

MVA adopts anti-identity theft software

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration purchased software that will allow it to combat identity fraud at all of its statewide locations. The software, called ID-Check and developed by Woodbury, N.Y.-based Intelli-Check, will help prevent individuals from using false out-of-state licenses and other fraudulent documents to obtain genuine Maryland state-issued driver's licenses. Intelli-Check develops identification and document-verication systems. ID-Check instantly reads, analyzes and verifies the encoded data in magnetic strips and bar-codes on government-issues IDs in approximately 60 jurisdictions in the United States and Canada to determine if the content and format is valid.
