SolarMetric hires Roos
Austin-based SolarMetric announced the hiring of Robin Roos as vice
president of professional services. Roos, based in London, will
spearhead European operations and establish worldwide consulting and
training for Kodo JDO, SolarMetric's implementation of the JDO standard.
Roos is the author of the book "Java Data Objects."
Game conference planned for September
The Austin Game Initiative announced details of the 2004 Austin Game
Conference (AGC), to be held Sept. 9-10 at the Austin Convention Center.
Microsoft and Sony will deliver a shared keynote: "Massively Multiplayer
Console is Coming." Scott Henson of Microsoft Xbox will discuss
Microsoft's approach to bringing MMOGs to the Xbox and Glen Van Datta of
Sony will discuss Sony's PlayStation 2 strategy. Separately, professor
of economics Edward Castronova will provide a keynote on digital
economies. The conference will deliver information on developing
multiplayer and massively multiplayer games as well as mobile games for
industry professionals with special emphasis on next-generation
technologies and business strategies for emerging products and
platforms. The unique program will consist of panel sessions and
workshops for consoles, PCs and mobile game devices plus a technology
pavilion so developers, technologists and business professionals can
network in a relaxed atmosphere. Registration for the two-day event can

Essential Security releases software
Dallas-based Essential Security Software released a PC security software
product called Essential Security Suite. The software lets users prevent
their outbound messages and files from being forwarded, saved, printed,
or screen-captured by the recipient. The new product protects files from
hackers and viruses and allows only the author or designated recipients
to access securely encrypted files.
Rathbun joins Melior
Dallas-based Melior Inc. said Michael D. Rathbun joined the company as
vice president of product development. Rathbun was previously director
of policy enforcement at Allegiance Telecom. He is an expert in
real-time embedded control systems, special-purpose communications
systems, and the design of TCP/IP-based clients and servers.
Meedio notes 10,000th member
Houston-based Meedio LLC announced the 10,000th registered user of its
online forums. Meedio is the descendent of the freeware application
myHTPC, which provides a television interface to digital videos, music,
photos, and other media stored on users' personal computers. myHTPC has
been downloaded over 500,000 times.
Wayport launches CyberCenters
Austin-based Wayport, a provider of Wi-Fi wireless and wired high-speed
Internet access in more than 2,500 locations, announced the launch of
CyberCenter in 15 hotels. Wayport CyberCenters feature a kiosk equipped
with notebook computers for walk-up access, cubicles with high-speed
Internet connections for guests using their own notebook computers,
printing capabilities, and an on-site Wayport data support specialist.
SMC picks Ashley Laurent software
Austin-based Ashley Laurent, a provider of network-enabled embedded
software solutions, was selected to provide a residential gateway
software package to SMC Networks, a leading provider of networking
solutions for the SMB/e, the ISP and all the way home, for use in their
EZConnect Wireless Cable Modem Routers. The EZConnect router combines a
cable modem with a four port router to combine and simplify LAN and WAN
connectivity to home network and SOHO users. The residential gateway
package combines components from Ashley Laurent's BroadWay Integrated
Services Software (ISS) to create an integrated solution that includes a
stateful inspection firewall, network address translation (NAT),
intrusion detection, IPSec VPN gateway, and PPTP and L2TP support.
