Grant helps schools find cyber threats
With hacking, spam and computer viruses disrupting more businesses and
even threatening national security, three area colleges will launch a
new program to train experts in countering such cyber-threats.
The colleges, using a combined $270,000 grant from the National Science
Foundation, will offer six classes that include hands-on training in
thwarting computer attacks, such as examining actual hard drives of
computers that have been invaded.
Students in the program can earn a certificate in the fledgling field of
computer forensics from Highline Community College, Seattle University,
and the University of Washington.
Modomail debuts Web mail service
Seattle-based Modomail.com said its recent introduction of Web mail will
include an address book with a built in contact management system
provided by the Plaxo Network enabling users to update and synchronize
contact information through many different platforms.
Modomail is a POP3 based e-mail service, providing its users with
server-side filtering. From simple rules based filtering to
white-listing, Modomail offers features and flexibility far beyond
comparable POP3 services. Modomail has also made its mark in the
anti-spam community by helping with the first Can-Spam case filed by the
FTC.
ConnX teams with IntraNexus
Redmond-based ConnX Solutions Inc., a maker of enterprise information
integration software, began a partnership with IntraNexus, provider of
the Allegra healthcare information system (HIS).
The partnership enables CONNX Solutions to target its offerings to the
specific requirements of the Allegra software users and, at the same
time, enhances IntraNexus offerings by opening up Allegra data for
access by other software tools.
BCC plans career conference
A career conference for high school and community college students,
focusing on science, technology, engineering, math and business
occupations, will be held Nov. 2 at Bellevue Community College (BCC).
Co-sponsored by BCC, The Boeing Company and the Northeast Tech Prep
Consortium, the free, full-day conference will offer speakers and panel
discussions to inspire students' career planning in the identified
fields.
Career discussions will led by panels of experts in the targeted fields,
focusing on such areas as: Computer Science/Information Technology;
Women in Business & Technology; Engineering: From Toasters to Space
Stations; Field Science: Science in the Real World; Bio-Technology; The
Value of Diversity in Business; Business: Local to Global; and Science
Intersections.
BCC also said it received a grant of $775,000 from the U.S. Department
of Labor to help create a National Center for the Biotechnology
Workforce.
Bioinformatics, a specialty within the field of biotechnology, uses
information science and technology to manage and analyze body of life
sciences data.
NSCC offers new credentials
North Seattle Community College's (NSCC) Information Technology
department is introducing three new short-term certificates and
unveiling new and improved IT degrees. NSCC's new certificates, all
three designed to be completed in as few as three quarters, include
Information Technology Windows 2000 (19 credits), Information Linux/Unix
(15 credits) and Network Security Specialist (19 credits). The two new
AAS degrees are Information Technology Software and Database
Concentration and Information Technology Web Development and Database
Concentration. A third degree, Network Infrastructure and Security
Support Specialist, has undergone changes to reflect current technology.
MacDonald joins Mac Discounter
Seattle-based Mac Discounter recently hired Joyce MacDonald as
administrative officer.
MacDonald was most recently the director of Odesea Virtual Assistant,
providing financial reporting, contract and project management services
to a variety of small businesses and individuals.
Mac Discounter also recently opened its new headquarters in Vancouver,
B.C., last month. The new offices are three times the size of Mac
Discounter's previous headquarters and will allow the company to stay on
track with its hiring projections, keeping the support group aligned
with the growth of Mac Discounter's customer base.
