Netli gains funding

Palo Alto-based application delivery network software maker Netli Inc. secured $8 million in a round led by Reed Elsevier Ventures. Netli's existing investors, including Morgenthaler Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Alta Partners, Nokia Venture Partners and Leapfrog Ventures, also increased their investment in the company.

The investment will further fuel the growth of Netli's business by accelerating the company's global marketing and sales activities and support the development of new services.

Canto expands executive team

San Francisco-based Canto, which provides digital asset management products, hired three new executives.

Cliff Kaplan joined Canto as senior vice president of Business Development at Canto Software Inc. He was previously with Quark. Chris Bowd has been appointed as resident director at Canto KK in Japan. He was previously president of Curventa, a design software developer. Michele Taylor is Canto's new director of strategic alliances. Based in Dubai with Canto FZ LLC, she is responsible for Canto's global training and certification business and developer relations. She was most recently general manager for Chromatek, a subsidiary of Kodak in New Zealand.

Ex-Inktomi CEO to head Openwave

Don Listwin, CEO of Redwood City communications software maker Openwave Systems, will be handing the job over to David Peterschmidt, the former CEO of Inktomi.

Listwin will remain as vice chairman of Openwave's board. Peterschmidt will serve as the company's CEO, president and a board member.

Google buys Keyhole Corp

Google Inc. has acquired Keyhole Corp., a Mountain View,-based digital mapping company. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

With an Internet connection, users enter an address or other location information and Keyhole's software accesses the database and takes them to a digital image of that location on their computer screen. The interactive software then gives users many options, including the ability to zoom in from space-level to street-level, tilt and rotate the view or search for other information such as hotels, parks, ATMs or subways. Keyhole creates a dynamic 3D interface for geographic information.

InterVideo reaches settlement with Acer

Fremont software maker InterVideo Inc. resolved a patent infringement suit against Acer Inc. and Acer America Corp. The company will license certain patents to Compal Electronics Inc., the company that manufactures Acer's PCs.

The two companies will work together to develop multimedia applications and portable consumer electronic devices. Additionally, Compal has agreed to license its patents to InterVideo.

In August, InterVideo filed patent infringement lawsuits against Acer Inc. and Acer America Corp. for infringement of various patents relating to its InstantON technology.

Local supercomputer sets speed mark

A supercomputer designed by IBM Corp. at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the fastest supercomputer in the world, the Department of Energy said.

The BlueGene/L supercomputer, used to manage the U.S.'s nuclear weapon stockpile, recently achieved a record-breaking performance of 70.72 teraflops, eclipsing the three-year-old top mark of 35.86 teraflops for the Japanese Earth Simulator in Yokohama, Japan.

A teraflop stands for 1 trillion floating point operations per second. In other words, the current BlueGene/L supercomputer can, in one second, perform the equivalent of one calculation per second on a calculator for about 2.2 million years.

Klei new Zantaz CFO

Pleasanton-based software maker Zantaz Inc. said Steven Klei is its new chief financial officer and senior vice president, finance and administration.

Most recently, he served as CFO at Pleasanton-based ProBusiness Services Inc.
