AmberPoint product bundled with Visual Studio

Oakland-based AmberPoint Inc., a provider of service-oriented architecture management products, said that through its continued relationship with Microsoft, the developers' edition of AmberPoint's industry-leading SOA management software has been distributed with the Beta 2 release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System.

AmberPoint Express was also bundled with Beta 1 of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, distributed in July 2004.

AmberPoint Express provides rich monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.

IT workers cautious, managers optimistic

The Hudson Employment Index for IT workers fell 21 points in May from 114.2 to 93.2, the lowest reading ever recorded for the IT Index. This decline in confidence was due to a significant decrease in optimism about personal finances and hiring intentions, as well as increased concerns about job loss.

Despite workers' concerns, optimism continues to climb among managers. The percent anticipating their companies will hire in the coming months rose two points to 35 percent, while the percent expecting layoffs dropped a point to 18 percent. Managers in the private sector were even more bullish as the number predicting increased hiring climbed from 44 percent last month to 48 percent in May.

Avanquest upgrades Fix-It Utilities

Pleasanton-based Avanquest USA, a publisher and developer of advanced PC software for business, professional and home users, released Fix-It Utilities Professional 6, an all-in-one PC performance optimization tool.

The company said a one-time installation of Fix-It Utilities automates important PC housekeeping chores to find and repair problems on an ongoing basis, ensuring programs load smoothly and run at optimal speed. The new integrated software also has been upgraded for improved detection and removal of malicious programs.

New to this version is an anti-spyware feature, which continually scans the system for spyware (and other forms of harmful software) and removes it from the PC. Fix-It Utilities 6 also features enhanced virus scanning protection, powered by Trend Micro, and includes active real-time monitoring with a new clean-up tool for quick and easy removal of detected viruses.

Record chip sales predicted

Worldwide sales of semiconductors will grow by 6 percent in 2005 to a record $226 billion, according to a revised forecast from the Semiconductor Industry Association.

The San Jose trade group's November forecast had projected that 2005 sales would be essentially flat with the $213 billion sales level of 2004.

The new forecast also projects a compound annual growth rate of 9.8 percent through 2008. The SIA projects that global chip sales will reach $309 billion in 2008.

The group attributed unexpectedly high sales strong demand in several important end markets, including personal computers and wireless handsets.

Key drivers of semiconductor growth in 2005 are forecasted to be cell phones, personal computers, digital televisions, and digital cameras.

LookWow releases PC product

San Francisco-based LookWow Inc., provider of a Web-based photo enhancement service, released its first PC product, LookWow 3.1, which gives users another option for accessing the innovative features in its Web-based photo editing service.

LookWow is used for online dating, sharing photos with friends and family and corporate photos. LookWow is a Java and PHP and .NET based application, created using patent-pending image filtering and processing technology.

PC Guardian gains funding

San Francisco-based PC Guardian Technologies Inc. said it raised $6 million in its first round of venture funding.

The company, which sells encryption software, said Altos Ventures and Cardinal Venture Capital both gave money in the round.

Anthony Lee of Altos Ventures and Derek Blazensky of Cardinal Venture Capital will both take seats on PC Guardian's board of directors as a condition of their companies' investment.

The company said it will spend the money on sales and advertising as well as ongoing research and development.
