PhatWare releases CalliGrapher 8.0 Beta

Mountain View-based PhatWare Corp. announced the beta availability of CalliGrapher 8.0, the next generation of the company's handwriting recognition software. CalliGrapher 8.0 is available immediately to consumers for Beta testing.

CalliGrapher analyzes pen strokes written in any application window, then converts those pen strokes into text and sends the recognized text to the target application. CalliGrapher recognizes arbitrary alphanumeric strings as well as words contained in its integrated dictionary.

PhatWare provides software products and professional services for mobile and desktop computers.

Tribe launches open profiles

San Francisco-based Tribe.net, a free online destination that helps local people connect with each other based on shared interests, has taken one step closer toward the Internet of the future by introducing "open profiles," a new technology that makes managing your personal profile on the Internet easier than ever before.

With Tribe's open profiles, users can aggregate data from countless other online destinations--basically, from any site that publishes an RSS feed. For example, a Tribe user can set his profile to automatically include the latest posts on his blog (via, for example, LiveJournal), the latest photos from his camera phone (via Flickr), his Amazon wish list, and even bookmarks from del.icio.us. Once established, the user's profile automatically updates whenever changes happen at any of those other sites.

PC Tools upgrades Registry Mechanic

San Francisco-based PC Tools released Registry Mechanic 5.0 today, the latest version of the popular computer utility that removes unnecessary and unused programs and files from the Windows registry that can crash or slow the operating speed of a computer.

Registry Mechanic safely cleans, repairs and optimizes registries that become congested through regular use and with different types of hardware, software, and drivers that slow the operation of a computer.

Version 5.0 also increases the efficiency of users' computer systems through the addition of registry compacting that optimizes the structure of the registry, and the inclusion of a system optimization feature which can increase the speed that a system loads and shuts down.

Muise new Knova CFO

Cupertino-based Knova Software, Inc., which makes service resolution management applications, said Tom Muise joined the company as chief financial officer in June 23.

Muise's prior experience includes serving as chief financial officer and vice president of operations for Embrace Networks, an enterprise software platform provider, and as chief financial officer and vice president of finance of Solopoint, a provider of marketing technologies and communications services for the broadband market.

Preventsys teams with Rapid7

Carlsbad-based Preventsys Inc., which makes enterprise security management products, announced a technology partnership with Rapid7, the provider of NeXpose vulnerability assessment and risk management software.

Under this partnership, joint customers will benefit from a more comprehensive security solution that helps them stay ahead of security threats.

The Preventsys Enterprise Security Management system will retrieve vulnerability scan results from Rapid7's NeXpose, then process and semantically correlate the data with other network information using its patent-pending SMART Engine, and concisely display the relevant, prioritized data on the Preventsys central security dashboard.

LiteScape releases IP telephony product

Redwood Shores-based LiteScape Technologies Inc. introduced a new product that configures and delivers interactive voice, text and image communications to IP telephones and other devices. Called OnCast, the product unites the capabilities within IP telephony with the communication and collaboration tools used in traditional computing environments such as calendaring, e-mail, and Web conferencing. OnCast is already being used by dozens of companies and organizations to increase the value of enterprise-wide VOIP deployments.
