UT System wins cash settlement from BlackBerry
maker
The University of Texas System has garnered a $1.8
million settlement in a federal patent lawsuit against the maker of the
popular BlackBerry mobile devices.
The UT System sued
Ontario-based Research in Motion Ltd. and Research in Motion Corp.,
claiming that the company infringed upon the software patent developed
at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Research in Motion will
pay the Board of Regents $1.8 million, a portion of which will go toward
the University of Texas at Arlington in the form of a research grant.
PowerLogix releases CPU upgrade card
Austin-based
PowerLogix released the 2GHz Single Processor PowerForce G4 7447A
processor upgrade card.
The card includes 512K of on-board L2
cache. It also features an on-board thermal sensor and real-time thermal
monitoring. Dynamic frequency switching is also supported for reduced
power demand.
The 2.0 GHz PowerForce G4 7447A is available for
Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics (Sawtooth), Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio,
Quicksilver and Quicksilver 2002 models. It is compatible with Mac OS
9.x and Mac OS X 10.3.5 and higher (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher is
required for thermal monitoring and DFS features).
Tyler signs
software deals
Dallas-based Tyler Technologies Inc. signed
contracts to provide financial software to the cities of West Hollywood,
Calif., and Albany, Ore.
Tyler will provide the city of West
Hollywood with core financial, payroll and human resources software. The
city also will implement software from Tyler that will allow
businesses, residents and employees to access the city's online services
and information.
Tyler also will install its software for core
financials, human resources, payroll and citizens services for Albany, a
city of about 44,000.
Tyler provides information management
software for local governments.
ViseonMedia teams with Court
TV
ViseonMedia, a Florida-based subsidiary of Dallas-based
Viseon Inc., said Court TV will provide content for a VisiFone consumer
pilot scheduled for early 2006 in which participants will view clips and
trailers from Court TV shows and national trials.
The VisiFone
Multimedia digital telephone for voice over the Internet protocol is a
digital telephone/videophone that is able to show video on a dedicated
third screen inside the consumer's home. It doesn't require a television
or personal computer, allowing the consumer to view personalized
information on their preferred schedule, ViseonMedia
said.
ViseonMedia, provides shopping, weather, news, information
and entertainment programming to VisiFone users.
Wireless
company to buy Taylor business
League City-based ERF Wireless
Inc. agreed to buy Skyvue USA East Central Texas Inc. of
Taylor.
Terms of the cash-and-stock transaction weren't
disclosed.
Skyvue USA specializes in providing wireless networks
in rural areas in the United States.
ERF Wireless provides
wireless broadband products and services.
BindView signs
General Mills
Houston-based BindView Corp. signed
Minneapolis-based General Mills Inc. as a new customer for its IT
security compliance software.
General Mills' brands include Betty
Crocker, Pillsbury, Green Giant, Haagen-Dazs and Old El
Paso.
Scalable Software expands into
Austin
Houston-based Scalable Software Inc. has opened an
Austin office.
The company makes software that help companies
manage their information technology assets and
activities.
Scalable Software's Austin office, located at 108 Wild
Basin Road, has 10 employees. Depending on the success of the business,
Scalable will probably have 15 to 20 employees in Austin a year from
now. Overall, Scalable has about 40 employees.
Scalable also said
that Scott Bils was named vice president of marketing for the Austin
office. Bils will oversee Scalable Software's marketing activities and
will lead the company's corporate marketing, demand generation and
product marketing efforts.
