IT worker confidence down

Confidence among IT workers plunged over 12 points from 109.9 to 97.5 in August. This is only the second time in its history that it fell below the base of 100. Sector employees rating their finances as excellent or good fell dramatically from 62 percent the previous month to 47 percent in August.

In addition, only 70 percent stated they were happy in their current jobs, compared to 75 percent in July. U.S. worker confidence fell 5.5 points, taking it to the lowest level on record as the national Hudson Employment Index dropped below the base of 100, also for only the second time ever, to 98.2.

After holding steady near 31 percent for nine consecutive months, the number of workers expecting hiring slipped to 30 percent. At the same time, the percent anticipating job cuts rose from 16 percent in July to 18 percent, which shows the same pattern from one year ago. Job security concerns also climbed a point to 21 percent this month, as the percent reporting job satisfaction slipped from 74 percent to 72 percent.

Columbitech update supports RFID readers

New York-based wireless security software developer Columbitech announced wireless VPN support for securing radio frequency identification (RFID) readers. This update contains security framework enhancements that provide specific protection for wireless communication with application systems.

With the solution and the open architecture of many RFID readers, users can implement third-party applications and rapidly develop new, application-specific, user-driven applications to better satisfy business goals and client mandates. In short, the Columbitech Wireless VPN provides flexibility by offering expanded functionality such as filtering and management capabilities.

Columbitech's Wireless VPN can be deployed to meet RFID reader challenges in different network environments. It is built on standardized protocols optimized for wireless communication to keep the security overhead to a minimum.

Globecomm gains Iraq contract

Hauppage-based Globecomm Systems Inc., which makes satellite-based communications products, signed a one-year contract extension with the Iraqi Telecom & Post Co.

Globecomm will provide International Voice Services to the ITPC for phone calls originated in Iraq to other parts of the world and for calls originated outside of Iraq through Globecomm's partners into the ITPC network. Globecomm Network Services Corporation is the primary service provider for the ITPC, has been carrying their international voice traffic since early 2004.

United Virtualities releases HotRecorder

New York-based United Virtualities said HotRecorder, a recording tool for VoIP conversations, has been upgraded to work with the newly launched Google Talk. This is the first unit to market that is capable of recording and storing any voice exchanges over Google Talk and includes free voice mail. The upgrade will be available for both the free and premium versions.

HotRecorder can also be used in conjunction with Skype, AIM, Firefly, Yahoo! Messenger, and Net2Phone among others that carry PC-originated VoIP.

HotRecorder, once downloaded, launches every time users access to their VoIP applications (now including Google Talk) giving them access to tools to record, store, search, send via email or play back their conversations and conference calls. The unit also features Emotisounds that enable users of HotRecorder to add humorous sounds to their conversations and a free voice mail for Skype and GoogleTalk.

Lingobit upgrades Localizer

New York-based Lingobit Technologies, which makes software localization tools, released a new version of its flagship product, Lingobit Localizer.

Lingobit Localizer is known for its software localization simplification of .NET (C#, VB.NET, Delphi.Net), MFC (Win32) and Java applications. In its updated version, Lingobit introduces groundbreaking features such as a full version control system, advanced reporting functionality and new tools that simplify the localization of forms and dialogs.

One of version 4.0's improvements is its enhanced visual editing capability of dialogs and .NET forms. In its latest format, Lingobit Localizer now possesses an advanced editor functionality that rivals that of Visual Studio.
