Hotspot services to reach $3.46 billion in 2009

Worldwide wireless data hotspot revenue will rise from $969 million in 2005 to $3.46 billion in 2009, according to Arizona-based In-Stat. The growth will occur as the number of hotspot locations nearly doubles in size from 100,000 in 2005 to almost 200,000 by the end of 2009.

The largest sector of the hotspot market will continue to be the cafe market (including coffee shops, fast food, and full service restaurants), which will grow from just over 40,000 venues worldwide in 2004 to just under 100,000 venues by 2009.

Pa. banking agency starts Web site for consumers

The Pennsylvania Department of Banking launched a new Web site that will alert consumers to the most recent department actions against financial service providers.

Consumers can sign up for free electronic updates at the site, www.banking.state.pa.us. The site also contains a search tool to connect consumers with financial service providers that are licensed and regulated by the Banking Department.

Earthlink will do city's wireless Internet network

Internet service provider Earthlink was chosen by Wireless Philadelphia to deploy a high-speed wireless network to serve the city's 135 square miles.

Under the terms of the proposal no city or taxpayer dollars will be used. Earthlink, which is partnering with Motorola, Canopy and Tropos Networks, will cover all of the costs of constructing, deploying and maintaining the network, which will be fully operational by the fourth quarter of next year.

Earthlink will rent space on the network to multiple Internet service providers and community organizations, such as colleges, who in turn will sell high-speed Internet access to city residents for about $20 per month and $10 per month for lower-income households.

Wireless Philadelphia, a city-created nonprofit organization, will receive a portion of the fees collected by Earthlink, which it will use to support programs addressing the digital divide and economic development.

The total cost of deploying, operating and maintaining the network had been estimated at between $15 million and $18 million, of which $10 million was for infrastructure.

SAP buys Canadian software company

SAP AG is buying Triversity Inc., a developer of software for point-of-sale systems.

SAP said Triversity's software complements SAP's retail software. Triversity, which is based in Toronto, and SAP have many common customers, including the Wawa convenience store chain, the Body Shop International and Trader Joe's Co.

SAP, an international software giant, is based in Walldorf, Germany. SAP's North American subsidiary, SAP America Inc., is based in Newtown Square, Pa.

IT worker confidence rebounds

According to the Hudson Employment Index survey, IT workers regained confidence in September, as the sector's index increased over seven points from 97.5 to 104.8. Increased job satisfaction, reduced layoff worries and optimism about personal finances spurred the increase. The percent happy with their current job jumped 12 points to 82 percent, the highest yet recorded.

Additionally, only 21 percent of sector employees were worried about losing their jobs, down from 29 percent in August and the lowest level all year.

Astea buys FieldCentrix

Astea International Inc. bought FieldCentrix for $3.34 million in Astea stock in a deal that could be worth more depending on future sales of FieldCentrix products and services.

Astea, a Horsham, Pa., developer of service-management software, said the boards of both companies had approved the deal.

FieldCentrix, a mobile field force automation company, is based in Irvine, Calif.
