Hotspot services to reach $3.46 billion in 2009

Worldwide wireless data hotspot revenue will rise from $969 million in 2005 to $3.46 billion in 2009, according to Arizona-based In-Stat. The growth will occur as the number of hotspot locations nearly doubles in size from 100,000 in 2005 to almost 200,000 by the end of 2009.

The largest sector of the hotspot market will continue to be the cafˇ market (including coffee shops, fast food, and full service restaurants), which will grow from just over 40,000 venues worldwide in 2004 to just under 100,000 venues by 2009.

Templeton joins Anne Arundel

Charlene Templeton was named the new director of technology training for Anne Arundel Community College's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

She will oversee open enrollment noncredit, continuing education computer training, including cybercrime courses, certifications and distance learning.

Templeton comes to AACC from Harford Community College where she has managed computer training, certifications and online training for 12 years.

Durham recognized for e-learning development

District-based Durham University was recognized for its e-learning development work in the Blackboard Greenhouse Projects, an international competition sponsored by Blackboard, to cultivate innovation in e-Learning. Blackboard is a supplier of e-Learning software and services.

The Blackboard Greenhouse Project is an annual grant program providing up to $25,000 to foster academic dialogue, research and best practices development in e-Education.

Vodium gains Navy contract

District-based Vodium was awarded a two-year contract with the U.S. Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) to be the provider of video webcast technology and services to deliver distance learning courses.

Vodium will provide over 50 hours of multimedia on-demand courses through the Navy's Integrated Learning Environment as well as Navy Knowledge Online portal. These training courses will be delivered to Navy seamen throughout the world.

The focus of the NETC initiative is to increase effectiveness through improved communication and understanding and to drive a more rapid transformation while also reducing overall Navy program costs.

Parks new ARHD project manager

Eldersburg-based tech consulting firm America's Remote Help Desk (ARHD) said Diane Parks is its new IT project manager. The company said Parks has more than 16 years of experience in the IT industry. She also has a a Master's Certification in Project Management and an IT Project Management Certification from the University of Maryland, University College.

Telkonet releases network kit

Germantown-based Telkonet Inc. released its Rapid Deployment Mobile Network Kit, which is validated for government-wide use.

The kit is a modular, mobile, self-contained and fully manageable version of the Telkonet iWire System that utilizes powerline carrier communications technology to enable the delivery of commercial high-speed broadband access from an IP platform by leveraging a building's existing internal electrical infrastructure. The building's existing electrical wiring becomes the backbone of the local area network.

Telkonet makes powerline carrier networking products that use existing electrical wiring.

Raxco praised by Windows users

Gaithersburg-based Raxco Software's PerfectDisk received two awards from the Windows IT Pro 2005 Readers' Choice Awards. PerfectDisk v7.0 took top honors as the leading Defragmentation Utility while PerfectDisk for Exchange was named the best Storage Management Tool.

Readers were asked to vote on their product preferences in 12 technology categories with 83 sub-categories. More than 1,700 readers chose among more than 750 products and services in an online poll held earlier this year.

BrightTools upgrades Activeworx

Grand Rapids-based BrightTools Inc. released Activeworx v2.5. Activeworx provides enterprise-grade security information management for leading security products such as firewalls and vulnerability assessment tools.

The latest version expands on the software's already management abilities with extended security device support, enhanced visual reports, and the addition of the new Activeworx Event Framework. It also brings previous events, logged in separate databases, into a single database. This enables advanced tracking, searching, relationship graphing, and relationship diagramming of a network's entire security posture.

Sheridan named among top leaders

Richard Sheridan, president of Ann Arbor-based software firm Menlo Innovations L.L.C., was named one of the 50 Most Prolific Leaders in Project Management by the Project Management Institute.

Sheridan was featured in an October special edition of PM Network, the institute's monthly publication.

Electronics recycler debuts Web site

Royal Oak-based Recycling for Charities, which collects cellular phones, PDAs and digital cameras to recycle them for donations, has launched its new Web site, developed by Trademark Productions Inc.

Individuals and business can collect wireless equipment and send it to RFC. The money from each unit collected is split with RFC and donated to the person's charity of choice. RFC accepts all makes and models, regardless of working condition, and all donations are tax-deductible.

Nonprofit organizations can sign up to be included on the list of charities by going to the RFC Web site, www.recyclingforcharities.com. This program can be used as a school, church or scout-troop fundraiser. Marketing materials can be downloaded from the RFC Web site.

IT worker confidence rebounds

According to the Hudson Employment Index survey, IT workers regained confidence in September, as the sector's index increased over seven points from 97.5 to 104.8. Increased job satisfaction, reduced layoff worries and optimism about personal finances spurred the increase. The percent happy with their current job jumped 12 points to 82 percent, the highest yet recorded.

Additionally, only 21 percent of sector employees were worried about losing their jobs, down from 29 percent in August and the lowest level all year.

In contrast, national worker confidence declined to yet another historic low, 96.8, as concerns around personal finances rose significantly.

Gyricon message boards used at UM

Gyricon L.L.C. has announced that the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan has incorporated dynamic messaging into the school's wireless network with Gyricon's SyncroSign message boards.

The administrative staff of the business now can create, schedule and wirelessly transmit timely information. The message board is a battery-powered, Wi-Fi network electronic sign incorporating SmartPaper, Gyricon's patented electronic-paper technology.

Gyricon develops and provides SmartPaper technology and wireless network electronic signs.

Livermore new Walsh IT chair

Walsh College named Jeffrey Livermore chairman of its business information-technology and information-assurance department.

Livermore, who has more than 25 years of software development experience, joins the Troy-based college from Monroe Public Schools where he had been director of technology.
