PowerDek moves to retailers
Pleasanton-based
software maker Avanquest Software said its file management utility,
PowerDesk Professional 6, is now available at CompUSA, Staples and other
leading retail outlets across North America.
The product is used
for organizing and tracking data files on the PC. PowerDesk Professional
6 features a file preview tool, giving PC users frustrated with the
speed or scope of the Windows Explorer preview function the option to
view document and graphic data files in more than 150 distinct file
formats either as convenient thumbnails" or in a floating viewer pane.
PowerDesk Pro 6 also allows dual-pane viewing of files in a single
window, negating the need in Windows Explorer to open an additional
viewing window.
Trolltech updates Qtopia
Palo Alto-based Trolltech released Qtopia Phone Edition 2.2,
the first Linux-based Voice-over IP software solution for mobile and
wireless phones and converged media devices. Qtopia Phone 2.2, the
latest version of Trolltech's application platform for Linux devices,
also features performance improvements and enhanced user interface,
multimedia and internationalization functionality.
The company
said Qtopia Phone is the only independent, open software solution for
Linux-based devices. It allows designers and manufacturers to develop
feature-rich phones and other mobile and wireless devices while
maintaining complete control of branding and the user experience.
Diamond releases new sound cards
Chatsworth-based Diamond Multimedia released a new line of
sound cards, Xtreme Sound. The card incorporates Dolby 7.1 channel
surround sound, 10-band equalizer, preset audio environments, headphone
and speaker support for up to eight channels, plus a multi-track
recording/editing studio..
Two sound cards will be offered under
the Xtreme Sound 7.1 line: Xtreme Sound 7.1 retailing and the upgraded
Xtreme Sound 7.1 DDL (Dolby Digital Live). A real-time encoding
technology, Dolby Digital Live converts any audio signal into a Dolby
Digital bitstream for transport and playback through a home theater
system.
IT worker confidence up in November
Confidence in the employment market among IT workers rose
marginally in November, as the sector's Hudson Employment Index inched
up 2.2 points to 101.1. Renewed confidence in personal finances and
heightened job satisfaction contributed to the slight increase.
Technology workers were about as optimistic as workers overall; the
composite Index held steady in November, slipping just .04 points to
100.1.
Nearly half (48 percent) of the workers in the IT sector
reported that their financial situations were improving in November, up
from 38 percent the previous month. There was a six-percentage point
drop to 35 percent in the number reporting that their finances were
getting worse. Job satisfaction rose five points to 76 percent in
November.
However, the IT workforce was significantly more likely
to expect layoffs in November, as that figure increased from 22 percent
to 27 percent. The number of workers concerned about job security rose
five points to 32 percent.
QualXpert buys Report Control
assets
San Francisco-based QualXpert Software, which makes
sales mentoring products, acquired the software assets of Report Control
Ltd., the pioneering developer of business process mapping technology.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Report Control developed and
marketed advanced business process automation software focusing on the
sales process. Report Control was founded to meet businesses' increasing
need for high visibility into, and on-going improvement of their sales
and other CRM processes. Examples of business processes made more
efficient by Report Control included direct sales, channel and
partner-related sales, marketing and customer
service.
Achievo buys Chinese software company
Dublin-based Achievo Corp. will buy a Chinese software
company, Jeyo Computer Technology Ltd. for an undisclosed
price.
Achievo performs technical services such as software
code-writing. The company said the deal would let it expand its service
base in China.
Jeyo's customers include Microsoft, IBM, and
Oracle. It also sells information technology outsourcing. Jeyo will be a
wholly-owned division of Achievo after the deal
closes.
