Samsill signs pact with Microsoft

New York-based Samsill Corporation, which makes business cases, media storage, ring binders, and sheet protectors, announced an exclusive multi-year brand licensing agreement with Microsoft Corporation.

As part of the new deal, Samsill will manufacture, market and sell a broad assortment of computer bags and business accessories leveraging the Microsoft brand. Microsoft will assist Samsill in the development of these products, focusing on making them relevant to the digital lifestyle. Products will be distributed through retail and commercial channels including office and consumer electronics stores beginning the first quarter of 2007.

Open-Xchange lauded by ServerWatch

Tarrytown-based Open-Xchange Inc. said its open-source collaboration server, Open-Xchange, was awarded the ServerWatch Product Excellence Award in the "Messaging and Collaboration Server" category.

Server Watch said, "Messaging and real-time communications are closely related categories, so we weren't surprised to see an open source product come out on top here, as well. Open-Xchange, a messaging and collaboration suite available under the GPL, finished well ahead of IBM Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003."

Hauppage Computer teams with Orb

Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc., which makes personal computer-based TV receivers, and Emeryville, Calif.-based Orb Networks, a software developer that gives consumers instant access to their content anywhere, said Orb technology will be bundled with WinTV-PVR products now available at retail stores and online throughout Europe.

Combining Hauppauge's WinTV-PVR products and Orb's software to any Windows XP PC, consumers will enjoy live or prerecorded TV streaming from their home PC on mobile phones and PDAs from anywhere in the world.

Gaming to generate $60 billion by 2011

According to a report by BCC Research, the value of worldwide shipments of the electronic gaming industry has reached nearly $36.5 billion in 2006. Shipments are projected to grow in value at a 10.5 percent average annual growth rate to reach almost $60 billion by 2011.

Games and software control the largest share of the total gaming market. Worth more than $20.7 billion in 2006, this industry will grow sharply to $33.6 billion in 2011. Gaming products command the second largest share of the market, worth $13.9 billion in 2006, growing to $22.1 billion 2011. Equipment and services, although the most specialized sector of the industry, will be the fastest growing sector of the market, reaching almost $2 billion by the end of 2006. It will reach $4.3 billion in 2011.

Elementool releases bug tracking tool

New York-based Elementool released a bug tracking add-in tool for developers using the Visual Studio.NET 2005 platform. It is available free to Elementool's community of project management solution subscribers.

The latest version of Elementool's service application bug tracking tool deploys directly in the Microsoft VS.NET 2005 development environment. This provides developers with a much easier, more streamlined way to track and save bugs, prioritize and assign bugs to team members, generate bug reports, customize forms and reports to their specific needs, and more, all within the VS.NET platform.

Elementool makes Web-based project management tools for developers, including bug, defect, time-tracking, and help desk tools.

IT workers generally happy with salaries

Compared to the general work force, IT workers are more satisfied with their compensation. In fact, nearly four out of five (78 percent) of them are very or somewhat satisfied with their cash and benefits, compared to 72 percent of all workers.

The findings come from Hudson's Transforming Pay Plans: 2006 Compensation and Benefits Report, which surveyed 10,000 workers across all sectors, examining employee attitudes about traditional and non-traditional pay and benefit programs.

IT professionals also anticipate making more money in 2006 than in 2005, and 57 percent indicate they will earn more. Only 41 percent of overall workforce believes that to be the case. Also, almost half (46 percent) of the IT work force received a raise within the last six months, compared to 33 percent of all respondents.
