nCipher
Woburn company wants to protect your data.
Posted by : Holly Dolezalek

As the world gets more connected, hackers find more ways to infect servers, take over software and hardware, and destroy data. In response, businesses are looking for better ways to protect themselves. Dave Cullinane, senior consultant at Woburn-based nCipher, spoke to us recently about nCipher and how the company's products can keep businesses' data safe and sound.

What is nCipher and what does it do?

nCipher is redefining cryptographic security to protect points of risk-network appliances, Web servers, custom software applications, and databases. We provide hardware and software products that enable organizations to implement best-practice security by addressing the challenges of cryptographic key management and performance. Many of the world's leading organizations--from Microsoft and Barclays Bank to PricewaterhouseCoopers and the U.S. Navy--rely on nCipher to deliver a sound e-security infrastructure. nCipher's products are particularly well-suited to organizations with high volumes of security-sensitive transactions, such as banking and financial institutions, government departments, e-retailers and online service providers.

What makes nCipher unique?

nCipher's core expertise centers on applying robust cryptographic solutions to points of risk. Sensitive or private information exists at multiple points in any organization: in the network appliances that control the flow of information throughout the organization; on Web servers where customer and partner information is transmitted over the Internet; in intranets and extranets; in applications and systems that use and manage digital certificates and signatures, communicate sensitive information, and contain sensitive code; and in databases that store sensitive and private information. Each represents a point of risk, where sensitive or private information can be exposed. nCipher helps an enterprise set security policies to protect this sensitive data and comply with security guidelines.

What is nCipher's future, and how does it fit with the future of business on the Web?

The use of cryptography will become more and more widespread in virtually every aspect of the information management environment, as organizations seek to protect critical information and meet the requirements of burgeoning privacy legislation. nCipher will continue to develop and deliver solutions that allow our customers to effectively and efficiently manage and use cryptography. This includes enabling more robust and centralized management of cryptographic keys; protecting sensitive or proprietary application code, as well as keys within the confines of the hardware security module (HSM); protecting sensitive information stores, including databases and storage-area networks; meeting the security needs of new and emerging technologies like digital cinema; and strengthening essential technologies like secure payment technologies and time stamping.

What is nCipher's business philosophy, and how is it practiced?

We are redefining cryptographic security. nCipher's Security World involves thousands of cryptographic keys, being used by hundreds of applications and residing in multiple locations. nCipher's new product, CodeSafe, is unique in its ability to protect sensitive application code in tamper-resistant HSMs using the Secure Execution Engine.

nCipher will continue to do things differently--whether it is a hardened database encryption solution or a broad key management environment, nCipher will continue to innovate. This attitude forms the cornerstone of our relationship with partners such as Broadcom. These values become more and more important as networks expand and the overall security architecture requires greater yet more flexible protection.
