Premio Computer
Local PC builder serves education market.
Posted by : Christy Mulligan

Back in 1989, Crystal Wu and Tom Tsao had the vision to create a company that could build quality computer systems and compete with top-tier PC vendors. With 20 employees and an office space of 3,800 square feet, they pulled in nearly $20 million in revenue their first year in operation. Thirteen years later, City of Industry-based Premio Computer is ranked among the top ten PC desktop server providers and has established itself as a primary supporter of the local education market. We recently spoke with Premio CEO Crystal Wu about the company and its growing success.

What does Premio Computer do?

Premio Computer Inc. manufactures, custom-configures, markets, and distributes the Premio brand of PC desktops, workstations and servers through its base of resellers across the nation. Our primary markets served are education, government, and business.

Could you tell us about some of the donations and partnerships you've made in the education market?

Premio has taken an aggressive role in supporting the education market through a number of programs and partnerships which have not only included donations, but educational seminars and internship programs.

As a partner in the Intel "Teach to the Future" training program, Premio Computer donated some 210 computer systems and related peripherals for delivery of training to master teachers and teacher participants. In addition, we also supported the program's special discount structure, allowing districts to purchase heavily discounted systems for teacher training.

With the support provided by Premio, Whitney High School in Cerritos has been able to incorporate a number of inventive programs not possible without computer technology. Premio has assisted education administrators in navigating through the complex maze of federal and state government funding opportunities; we have established an internship program that has allowed three students from Whitney to assist engineers and network administrators at Premio; and we've set up a Web site curriculum that enables students to equip themselves with the skills they need for entry-level Web site positions. In addition, Premio recently developed eSembler, one of the first applications that provides students, teachers, parents, and administrators with a Web-based interface for managing grades, assignments, attendance, calendars, and communications within a K-12 environment.

What types of things has the company done to ensure success during the current economic climate?

Premio has strived to ensure that our product launches are made at the forefront of the technology curve to provide the latest and most cost-effective solutions to our customers; and to ensure that Premio continues to compete well with the industry leaders to ensure its continuing viability.

What do you think makes Premio unique?

In short, the personal touch. Its regional offices are strategically located to be as close as possible to its customer base. Unlike many of its competitors, the company does not "walk away" after delivering systems. Premio personnel are there to provide installation, networking, support, service, consulting, and training as required. We keep delivering quality-long after the boxes are shipped.

What can we expect to see from Premio in the near future?

You'll see a continuing flurry of new productions, based on the latest Intel and Microsoft technologies and reduced form factors, a continuing emphasis on eSembler as we explore further mutual opportunities with our customers, and you'll see additional OEM contract manufacturing with our partners.
