Computer Sciences exits global Crossing IT deal

Information technology services giant Computer Sciences Corp. has decided to cancel a $400 million contract with troubled international communications carrier Global Crossing, based in Beverly Hills. The IT outsourcing service contract between the two companies was inked late last year.

According to a Computer Sciences statement, the contract was worth $400 million to Global Crossing and was yet to be implemented for Computer Sciences.

"The $400 million contract … is being terminated by mutual agreement following a determination that the agreement no longer serves the interests of both companies," Computer Sciences said in a statement.

Global Crossing, which was building fiber-optic cable networks that circle the globe, filed for bankruptcy protection in January. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is probing Global Crossing's accounting practices. -NewsBytes

Lindows.com releases suit details

Lindows.com has gone public with a sneak peek at some of the counterarguments to a lawsuit filed by Microsoft after the San Diego company named its Linux-based products LindowsOS and Lindows.com. The suit was filed in December, two months after LindowsOS was introduced.

Court documents posted on the company Web site say Lindows.com will argue that Microsoft does not show why the court should issue a preliminary injunction, and that to do so would exclude Lindows.com from competition.

No company, especially one that has been found guilty of maintaining a monopoly, should be allowed to stop other firms from using a descriptive term common throughout an industry, the company's CEO said in a statement.

Lindows.com filed its own lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, seeking a judgment allowing the Lindows names to be used by the company without infringing on Microsoft trademarks.

The suit also asks the court to declare invalid certain Windows-related trademarks and service marks registered by Microsoft and to find the software behemoth guilty of unfair competition. -NewsBytes
