Dear Molly: I am currently working in a dead-end job--unless I want to become a manager, which I don't. I am really into music and computers. While I am a pretty good guitar player, that's not the direction I want to go. I want to learn about digital music production and topics like Internet radio. Supposing I learn enough, can I get a job doing this?

Molly says: Yes, you most certainly can get a job doing this kind of work, which is, by the way, called music production and engineering. The Berklee School of Music in Boston offers an in-depth, hands on degree program for careers in this field. You can get a lot of information about the program and related careers by visiting the School's Web site.

You may find that training for these kinds of jobs is limited to major metropolitan areas like Boston. So, look first in the major city nearest you--schools of music such as Berklee are good bets for places to find such programs. Major cities and the surrounding areas are also where you are going to find a job.

Once you have the training, here are some of the careers you might consider: Producer, Production Assistant/Coordinator, Digital Remastering Engineer, Multimedia Developer, and on and on. Look for information about jobs and internships with the company. Pay particular attention to the job title and requirements.
