Featured ComputerUser Writers' Guidelines and Terms of use. (Please read before submitting) ComputerUser is the advocate for users of computer-related technology. We don't restrict the term user to end-users. Rather, we count any person who uses computer technology among our target readership. This list includes developers, programmers, administrators, help-desk representatives, systems analysts, and end-users, among others. And we don't just solve technology-related problems for our readers; we serve as advocates for their whole computing lives. This includes strong emphases on career planning and training, and opinion pieces that help them put computing in proper perspective. This is ComputerUser's target audience; though its readership ranges from neophyte home users to large corporate IT users.

There are two types of ComputerUser freelance contributors: Contributing writers and Contributing editors. The former is the entry-level freelance position that remains with an author for up to five published articles. The latter is reserved for those frequent contributors who have done solid and consistent work for more than a year. Contributing editors are rewarded with better coverage.

Content types
Content for the website falls into five categories: On Point, On Time, On Topic, Off Topic, and On Task.

On Topic is a multifaceted feature related to the theme of each issue. Articles may consist of a review of application, products or services, an in-depth look at Active Directory, an overview of virtual private networking technologies, an exposé on the ethics of data mining, and a Q&A with the man in charge at Novell. We typically have one or two openings per month in this section at the start of the year, but these fill up quickly as the year progresses. Word counts: 1,800 to 2,000 words

Off Topic is another feature well that covers topics on a serial basis. Bleeding Edge and Graphics appear monthly, while Webmaster alternates with Networking, as does Hardware with Software. Word count: 1,800.

On Task is a set of how-to columns written by the same author each month, including Business, Internet/Sites, Intranet, Careers/Training, Windows, Mac, Mobile , and Tech. In a typical On Task column, the author writes about how to integrate a type of technology into the business and reviews two competing products in that technology category. Topics are on the importance of clean, uninterrupted power and reviews on UPS units that do the job. Word counts: 1,200 to 1,400.

How to contribute and become a part of the ComputerUser community.

Though we like a variety of voices, we have yet to find a better approach than standard Medill style with plenty of sources delivered in a Strunk and White manner. We do, however, control usage very carefully. If accepted, you will receive a style guide which outlines usage rules in detail. Send all articles to the appropriate e-mail address as attachments in Word or as RTF files. Do not use compression, unless the assignment calls for graphics, such as screen shots, in addition to the text. Indicate in the subject of the e-mail message the assignment title and its anticipated PUBLISH date. Extensions can be granted in certain circumstances as long as they are communicated before the deadline. We would rather grant an extension than do a lot of work on an article only to send it back for revision. Query before submitting any feature or review. Query with photocopied clips of your work that have appeared in other publications.
