| NPA-NXX |
As suggested by the North American Number Plan (NANP), NPA-NXX numbering plan defines the way telephone numbers are generated in the US. Number Plan Are (NPA) is the three-digit area code used to identify the region to which the number belongs. NXX, again a three-digit number with N ranging from 2-9, uniquely identifies the exchange within that area. NPA and NXX together form a distinct Central Office (CO) number. According to NANP, all telephone numbers within the US are seven-digit numbers using the following format รข?? NPA.NXX.XXXX, where XXXX is any digit from 0-9

| Numbering plans |
Numbering plans specify the way numbers on a telephone should be used to make outgoing calls. Failure to use these plans prevents users from making external calls.
