| V and H Coordinates |
Jay K. Donald of AT&T in 1975 developed the Vertical and Horizontal (V and H) coordinates system to determine the distance between telephone switching centers. Square root of one-tenth of a mile forms the basic unit of this distance measuring technique. This system allows usage of a slide rule in the field. Certain telephone rate calculating applications still use this system, which uses the following formula to compute distance between two telephone exchanges:Distance in miles = square_root (((V1-V2)2 +(H1-H2)2) /10)

Data encryption, authentication of remote users and mechanisms for hiding or masking information about the system from potential attackers on the public network, are important security features of most VPN systems.
