Fargo DigiGirlz Camp Opens Technology Doors to Young Women

FARGO, N.D. - June 7, 2007 - High-school girls from around the nation will visit Microsoft's Fargo campus next week to attend DigiGirlz, a technology day camp for girls in grades 8-10. The goal of the camp is to educate and inspire high-school girls to learn more about the vast opportunities and career choices available to them in the high-tech industry.

 

The Fargo camp will run Tuesday, June 12, through Thursday, June 14 and will feature keynotes from female role models including Tami Reller, corporate vice president of the Microsoft Business Solutions group at Microsoft; Judy Green, Executive Director for the YWCA; and Aura Lee Lunde, national vice president of public relations at Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

 

The DigiGirlz camp will include highly interactive and visual activities such as classes on hardware repair, Internet safety, HTML and Microsoft Visual Basic programming, Microsoft Office System 2007, career advising and job shadowing.

June 12th

9:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.              Hardware Session- Attendees will get to tear apart computers and learn how to put them back together while performing activities such as adding memory.

 

10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.             Visual Basic - Microsoft developers will lead this informative session exposing attendees to the Visual Basic
programming language.

 

12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.            Lunch

 

12:30 p.m. - 1:20 p.m.              Self Defense Session - Microsoft team members certified in self defense will teach this session providing the attendees with some basic skills needed to defend themselves.

 

1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.                Keynote - Aura Lee Lunde, National Vice President of public relations at Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Inc. will address the topic of Internet safety.  A senior in high school herself, Aura Lee is a Cooperstown, N.D. native.

 

2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.                Internet Safety Hands on Project -During this session attendees will be divided into team to discuss the risks of different internet activities and how to avoid them.

 

3:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.                Group Photo

 

June 13th

8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.                Keynote - Judy Green, Executive Director for the YWCA will address the topic of technology as it relates to the non-profit field.

 

9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.               HTML Session - Attendees will learn how to build web pages using HTML.         

 

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.              Team Building  Activity - Attendees will participate in a fun activity that will  demonstrate team dynamics.

 

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.                Microsoft PowerPoint / Microsoft Office System Session - This educational session will teach attendees how to use Microsoft PowerPoint and features of the Microsoft Office System to create marketing materials and other projects.


2:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.                Marketing the YWCA - This hands-on session will give attendees the opportunity to use skills learned throughout the DigiGirlz camp to create marketing materials for the YWCA.

 

June 14th

8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.               Leadership Session Presentation on Women and Leadership followed by networking activity.

 

10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.             Resume Building & Career Opportunities Session - Attendees will learn how to build solid resumes and will be introduced to tools allowing them to research career choices.

 

12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.              Job Shadowing - Attendees will be "shadowing" Microsoft employees, doing everything from listening in on customer support calls to working in one of the Microsoft testing labs.

 

2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.                Keynote - Tami Reller, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Business Solutions will discuss the path she took to her current role from growing up in Grand Forks, ND to becoming an executive in one of the largest technology companies in the world.

 

3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.                Microsoft Panel - Women team members will tell their stories regarding how they became interested in technology and will  answer questions posed by the participants.

 

Members of the media are invited to attend any session of interest.
