A private communication network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide secure access to their proprietary data to remote offices or individual users. VPN systems can be hardware based, firewall based or software based. Data encryption, authentication of remote users and mechanisms for hiding or masking information about the system from potential attackers on the public network, are important security features of most VPN systems.

802.1p
Used in networks based on 802 protocols, 802.1p standard provides quality of service (QoS) by prioritizing traffic without requiring bandwidth reservation. The standard is implemented at the Media Access Control (MAC) level in a network. It defines the Generic Attributes Registration Protocol (GARP) and GARP virtual LAN (VLAN) Registration Protocol â?? two VLAN related protocols enabling related hosts to request membership and registration in a VLAN. It supports AppleTalk, SNA and IPX.
802.1q
This standard helps compartmentalize large networks into smaller segments so traffic can be managed to use optimal bandwidth. It also enhances network security. 802.1q further defines the standards for VLANs and establishing communication between them.
911
Also known as E911 or Enhanced 911, this service allows cellular phone and VoIP callers to call 911. Besides, E911 allows tracking the position of the caller as well. A 911 call is usually routed to what is known as the Public Safety Answering Point or PSAP. In turn, the PSAP routes calls forward. Until the mid 1990s, cell phone users could not connect directly to the PSAP. However, an FCC ruling in 1996 mandated cell phone providers to route E911 calls directly to the PSAP. The FCC in 2005 also ruled that VoIP services provide users with the E911 capability. To do so, 911 calls are required to connect to the regular phone network.
