Word Definition
DNIS (Dialed Number Identification Service)
A common feature of toll-free services, call receivers use the DNIS to identify the telephone number a caller dialed. Organizations with multiple 800 or 900 telephone numbers use this service to detect the toll-free number a caller dialed and handle it accordingly. For instance, a caller dialing a sales and marketing toll-free number is directed to the sales and marketing department, whereas someone dialing the customer service number is connected to a customer care personnel.
DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi Frequency)
Otherwise known as touch tone, DTMF refers to the signals produced when touch-keys on a telephone are pressed. Pressing a button on a touch-tone phone produces two tones, one for the row and one for the column. Both these tones are used to determine the number pressed. The same principal is used for data entry using a push-button telephone as in the case of phone banking, ticket booking and voice mail.
Dynamic Jitter Buffer
A sound distortion reducing mechanism, dynamic jitter buffer gathers and handles voice packets shifting them at regular intervals to the voice processor.
E&M (Ear and Mouth)
Ear and Mouth is a VoIP technology which uses a conventional earpiece to receive incoming voice but uses a microphone to transmit voice across. This technology makes it easier for a PBX system to detect when a call is disconnected.
E.164
E.164 is the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) administered global numbering system which describes the structure of a telephone number (a country code, a city or area code plus a phone number).
E1
E1 telecommunication lines are similar to T1 communication lines widely used in North America. Primarilyy deployed in Europe, E1 lines consist of 30 voice channels and offer speeds up to 2.04 Mbits/sec. Businesses in Europe use E1 telecommunication lines to connect and use the Internet. The E1 interface connects to the RJ-48C connector using two pairs â?? TX and RX. Also used by VoIP networks, E1 interfaces allow communication between the VoIP IP PBX server and data channels.
E911
E911 or Enhanced 911 allows cellular phone and VoIP callers to call 911. Besides, E911 allows tracking the position of the caller as well. A 911 call is usually routed to what is known as the Public Safety Answering Point or PSAP. In turn, the PSAP routes calls forward. Until the mid 1990s, cell phone users could not connect directly to the PSAP. However, an FCC ruling in 1996 mandated cell phone providers to route E911 calls directly to the PSAP. The FCC in 2005 also ruled that VoIP services provide users with the E911 capability. To do so, 911 calls are required to connect to the regular phone network.
Echo Canceling
Echo cancellation is the process of removing echo from VoIP calls so customers get quality sound devoid of an echo. All echo cancellation algorithms work by producing several copies of the same signal. Each of these copies is delayed by a time interval at the end of which they arrive with their unique "taps". Echo delay size depends on the total count of taps, which are then weighted and subtracted from the received signal to remove an echo
Echo Reduction
The process of reducing echo in a call. Several echo reducing software are available in the market.
EMS (Extended Metropolitan Service)
A subscription plan, which enables users to make calls to or receive calls from specific exchanges for a flat rate instead of the applying long distance charges.
