Word Definition
Endpoint
The SIP or H.232 terminal that can call and receive calls by itself.
FEC (Forward Error Correction)
Enhances voice quality by recovering and correcting a fixed number of corrupt voice packets. FEC enables the receiver to do so without any reference to the transmitter.
Firewall
Firewalls are traditionally in-line devices or software components that form the first line of defense against data security threats. Firewalls are designed such that only known IP addresses, emails and other web-based services are allowed to pass through. Commonly, firewalls perform Network Address Translation (NAT), wherein one external IP address is shared amongst many internal computers. This accounts for efficient protection of network data from malicious attacks.
FoIP (Fax Over Internet Protocol)
FoIP is the technology that enables the transmission of fax messages over a VoIP line. In this technology, every digital message is distributed into various packets and then relayed through the Internet. This is unlike a traditional Fax technology, where the digital messages are converted into analog signals.
Forking Proxy Server
Forking proxy server searches multiple locations to determine the actual call recipient in a telephony network based on session initiation protocol (SIP). SIP is a text-based protocol used to transmit voice and multimedia data over the Internet.
FXO (Foreign Exchange Office)
A Foreign eXchange Office (FXO) interface receives telephony service, usually from a Central Office of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Ideally, an FXO interface performs the following actions: generate DTMF (touch tones), signals On Hook/Off Hook to the Telco network device, detect dial tone, detect ringing, detect message waiting and decode caller ID. A PBX involves two kinds of interfaces - FXS and FXO. FXS and FXO are complementary to each other, as a telecommunications line from an FXO port must be connected to an FXS port. The line coming in from your wall jack is an FXO line that controls your normal phone, which is an example of an FXS device.
FXS (Foreign Exchange Station)
FXS or Foreign Exchange Station devices are considered to be the electrical opposite of an FXO card or device. FXS provides the same interface as the traditional analog line that is provided by your phone company to most homes or small businesses. A typical FXS interfce would provide services such as: dial tone, ringing voltage, detection of DTMF (touch tone), message waiting and calling line ID.
G.711
Providing a bandwidth of 300-3400 Hz, this ITU-TSS protocol is the underlying principle of video conferencing systems. Released in 1972, G.711 uses 56 Kbps and 64 Kbps data rates.
G.723.1
Transmitting audio signals at 5.3 Kbps and 6.3 Kbps in 30 millisecond streams, G.723.1 forms the basis for several IP telephony systems but is unsuitable for transmitting Fax tones, DTMF or music.
G.726
This codec based on ADPCM functions at speech compression rates of 16-40 Kbps, with 32 Kbps being most frequently used.
