The Cave of Lascaux
The Palaeolithic cave at Lascaux, France, discovered by four teenagers in 1940, is one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century. This virtual museum specializes in exhibiting art created specifically for the World Wide Web medium. Vincent Van Gogh Information Gallery
This website is not only a comprehensive and well-organized art resource, but also a fine example of how hypertext can be used to best advantage. More than 1,760 pages and 1,720 graphics are included in this website about Vincent Van Gogh's life, art, and letters. The gallery lists all of Van Gogh's paintings alphabetically and has reproductions of many. Currently there are 746 paintings available for viewing, plus an additional 256 sketches and watercolors. Each painting is listed with its title, time and place of origin, current location, and other information. A search page can help users who may not know the exact title. You can click on a world map to find Van Gogh paintings at museums and galleries in any location. Other treats for Van Gogh fans are some of Vincent's juvenile works, and photographs of Vincent, his family and close friends, and places that were important in his life. The site has a biography and chronology of Vincent's life, and the text of letters between Vincent and his brother Theo. The Roland Collection
The Roland Collection is a stunning library of more than 600 films on art representing the work of over 230 directors from 25 different countries. Its over 2,500 web pages display JPEGs and GIFs of works by by Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, Rembrandt, and hundreds of artists from pre-history to the present. Over seven hours of instant streaming video at all modem speeds allow users to sample 500 films. The films are indexed alphabetically, and a search engine makes it possible to locate films on the art of any time period, artistic style, age-range, or subject matter. Other indexes include the film directors, scriptwriters, narrators, composers, and awards. The website is in English and French; the listed films are all in English but many are also in one or more of 16 other languages. The Museum of Counter Art

The World's Largest Art Opening
Before the Internet was available, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco could only exhibit 3-4% of its collection at one time, leaving most of the works of art in storage. Following the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 the museums began a mammoth project to take inventory of the entire collection, photographing and digitizing each piece of artwork. The result was the Museum's new Web site, The Thinker. Now users will have access to all of the artwork all of the time; enjoy art in a new way, at home or in the office, searching the database by personal interest; and see some of the most beautiful artwork for the first time, works rarely seen or too fragile to display. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco houses a permanent collection of over 115,000 objects, with 60,000 works on paper -- the largest searchable art imagebase in the world. Since the first century AD, when paper was invented in China, people have been folding it into shapes. The Chinese developed simple forms, some of which survive to this day. The secret of paper was carried to Japan in the sixth century AD by Buddhist monks. Paper was used in architecture, in the many rituals of everyday Japanese life, and in the Shinto religion.
