Alma Mater Football League (AMFL.AlmaMaterSports.com) is a fantasy game just for them. In fact, a successful AMFL season relies on the insights of the true fan.
An avid college football fan himself, creator Vito Lore developed AMFL as an answer to two major shortcomings with existing college fantasy football. First, the games have an overwhelming number of teams and players to track. Second, victory requires drafting players from rival teams.
"It’s just wrong: Buckeyes having Wolverines on their teams, Longhorns with Sooners, Gators with Bulldogs, and so on," says Lore. "But you have to do it to be competitive."
In contrast, AMFL coaches can build game-day line-ups exclusively from their favorite school’s roster and still win (see demo). For this reason, AMFL provides a greater range of stats than other leagues, such as using individual defensive players.
For each game, AMFL coaches select eight individual players, four offensive and four defensive, with one player from each side given "star" status. The players score based on a point system weighted to equalize all positions. Star players receive double points.
To make the season more competitive, AMFL limits the number of times a player can suit up. Users must think strategically and plan ahead, relying on knowledge of player statistics, injuries, and their school’s opponents.
"AMFL is for those who bleed school colors," emphasizes Lore. "These knowledgeable fans have the edge."
AMFL’s innovative approach led to an FSTA Most Unique Contest Award nomination in the league’s inaugural season. This season, thirty schools have been added, almost doubling last year’s offering. Available teams include all schools from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Big East, and SEC conferences, as well as Notre Dame.
AMFL is also offering new premium content. Subscribers have access to tools that help them hone their strategy. They can also post to a bulletin board and send personal messages to others, heightening camaraderie (and rivalry) within the AMFL community.
So go ahead, be a true fan and win!
