Analyzing ‘SYSTEM’ hive corruption in Windows 2000 and tips to perform Windows data recovery

For instance, you may come across the following error message while trying to start your Windows 2000 based-computer:

“Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

windowssystem32configsystemd”

Cause:
The above error occurred due to the corruption of 'SYSTEM' hive of the registry.

This would prevent you from accessing the precious data that you saved in your system. Use a backup to restore all the lost or inaccessible data. If the backup is missing, follow the below mentioned resolution steps to recover Windows data.

Resolution:

You need to restore the 'SYSTEM' registry hive using the Recovery Console. For this, the procedure is described as follows-

Restart the system using the Windows 2000 installation disc.
When the 'Welcome to Setup' screen appears, press 'R' for repairing the existing Windows installation. .
Press 'C' to choose the Recovery Console.
Choose the Windows installation you need to repair and press Enter.
Give the administrative password and press Enter.
Change the name of the System file in the '%SystemRoot%System32Config' folder to 'System.old'. For renaming the file, run the following commands at the command prompt:

'cd system32'
'cd config'
'ren system system.old'

Now, copy the System file in the ' %SystemRoot%Repair' folder to '%SystemRoot%System32Config ' folder by running the commands given below:
cd..
cd..
cd repair
copy system %systemroot%system32config
Restart your PC.
