Tech expert Karl Volkman of Chicago’s SRV Network, Inc., predicts that context awareness will be a major factor in the next wave of “smart” products.
“Right now we have products available that can detect what a user wants it to do, but only when given a command. In the coming months, we’re going to see products that can sense what the user wants without a direct verbal or physical cue. It’s a big step,” Volkman says.
The idea of context awareness has been discussed for several years, but for it to take shape in the real world is a major step forward in the world of tech products. This week’s Consumer Electronics Show will introduce device sensors that interact with its other components, like cameras and microphones, to determine the needs of the user.
Companies like Qualcomm, the largest supplier of chips for smartphones, also suggests mobile devices will be able to interact with external sensors, like in a user’s home or car. They refer to this as a “digital sixth sense.”
Smartphones already have sensors that detect movement, what direction it is facing, and orientation. While applications like Apple’s Siri have been popularized among mainstream consumers, experts predict that even smarter devices will be introduced that include facial recognition and hand gesture recognition. Movea, a tech company based in France, is working on motion sensing technology that can detect where it is on a person and whether that person is in a car or on a bike. France Telecom and Omek Interactive Ltd. are developing products that can be controlled by hand gestures.
