With the latest developments at some key Westfield shopping centres, it seems hundreds of cleaners employed by the Spotless cleaning contractor may be walking off the job at midnight tonight.
Keen to avoid the overflowing bins and messy food courts, shoppers are heading online to take advantage of the untidy conditions.
Online Marketing Company Oracle Digital’s Head of Operations, Clint Maher, says that shoppers over the Christmas period will simply not tolerate unkempt conditions, and instead they are flocking online. “From a consumers point of view, why would you want to be crowded into a shopping mall in the first place, let alone when the cleaners have gone on strike.”
And it appears that there is plenty of supporting evidence to back this up. Online retailer kogan.com.au November sales were up 330% on the same period last year. This figure is similar with many others Internet retailers as well.
Maher goes on to say, “Apart from the convenience, you are much more likely to pay less online, and the service from the majority of online shops is a very pleasant experience.”
Oracle Digital, whom send web traffic to their customers websites via search engine optimisation, have also noticed powerful trends in the volume of search traffic since last Christmas. Maher states, “It’s quite exciting seeing to see the dramatic uptrend in searches for consumables and gifts this year. If I were a retailer without an online sales division, then I would be very, very worried.”
Online sales may have peaked for this Christmas period, although will the shopping centres be able to claw back some sales in the Boxing Day sales? With many online retailers now offering even everyday lower prices than the big retailers sale price, we may start to see a major shift in consumer spending.
