AWE Announces Winner of 2012 Literacy Success Award For Public Libraries

Chester, PA (PRWEB) January 29, 2013

AWE, Inc. is pleased to announce the winner of the 2012 awe inspiring: AWE’s Literacy Success Award. “This award recognizes the work libraries do to promote literacy and learning in their communities,” said Michael Mok, VP of U.S. Sales for AWE. “We would like to thank all of the libraries that submitted their programs. We are always so impressed by all the amazing programs happening in libraries all across the country.”

The winner of the third annual award is Tualatin Public Library in Tualatin, Ore. A panel of five judges selected the winner. Tualatin Public Library was presented with the award at ALA Midwinter on January 26, 2013. Their awe inspiring winning submission was Mystery Night at the Library, an event for elementary school children and their parents conducted at night after the library closes.

Mystery Night is designed to teach information literacy skills to support academic achievement and combines the excitement of a scavenger hunt, fun lessons about all the library offers and experience navigating the building, the collections, and the online resources. During the program, children and parents learn how to use the library's online resources and the library catalog to solve a set of mystery questions. The answers to the mystery questions lead the children to books containing cut-out letters that when pieced all together reveal the location of a special prize, which was donated by the Friends of the Tualatin Library. The library has conducted the program four times and has offered a Spanish-only session as well as bilingual sessions. Popular demand ensures there will be more Mystery Nights in 2013.

The runner-up finalists included Welcome to America, from the Aurora Public Library in Aurora, IL; Flowers in February and Spring Forward into Reading, from Hopkins District Library in Hopkins, MI; Early Literacy Story Time Programming from the Onondaga County Public Library in Syracuse, NY; and The Twozees’ Storytime from Bedford Public Library in Bedford, TX. Details of all of the programs submitted as well the judges’ bios can be found at
