Installing an older or incorrect firmware version may prevent your modem from working at all, so check the current firmware version of your modem before hunting for a firmware update. Double-click the Modems icon in your Control Panel. Click the Diagnostics tab and highlight the COM port that drives your modem, then click the More Info button. A brief dialog will appear telling you that the system is communicating with the modem. Then a More Info dialog will appear listing port information, along with a whole list of AT commands and responses. Check the ATI3 entry for your firmware version (for example, my SupraMAX 56I modem lists the version as V2.1.2.136.1 b).
