Chicago Projection Mapping uses 3D Projection Technology to Breathe New Life into Downtown Los Angeles

Chicagoland-Based Projection Mapping Firm Partners With Major Retailer for Halloween and Day of the Dead Events

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 03, 2014

Hollywood is well known for the films it keeps on the screen, but on October 31, 2014, Illinois-based 3D Projection company Chicago Projection Mapping (CPM) will help the LA Live Nokia Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles break the fourth wall. In conjunction with US-based major retail chain, CPM has produced a five-minute entertainment projection display to celebrate not only Halloween but also the Hispanic holiday Dia De Los Muertos (more commonly known as Day of the Dead). Over October 31 and November 1, the repeating five-minute mapping display will repeat every 30 minutes, and will feature iconography of both holidays.

A relatively novel technology, 3D mapping is a way of projecting images onto a 3D object in a way that blurs the lines of reality between the projection and the object. In the case of the LA Live Nokia Plaza installation, the uniquely mapped content will be projected on a number of mock headstones and a specially designed Dia De Los Muertos altar. Just as Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos both blur the lines between the physical and the metaphysical, the CPM constructed mapping display is designed to blur the lines between the real and the visible.

“We wanted every element to honor the shared heritage of these two exceptional autumn holidays,” said J Matthew Nix, Project Lead for Chicago Projection Mapping. “They’re both so visual. It really gave us a lot to play with in terms of the custom mapping content were able to design.” Because the content is intended to not only honor but augment the experience of trick-or-treaters and DDLMers alike, Chicago Projection Mapping eschewed stock elements in favor of carefully designed custom animations to make the overall creation, just as zombies or spirits, come alive for both nights.

While the length of the display measures only five minutes, the innovation it brings to festivities is designed to be memorable for some time to come. This type of 3D projection display brings a modern twist to an ancient pair of Holidays, and it’s easy to see implications beyond this two day event. Retail centers may use projection mapping to raise interest around Black Friday sales, or cities and municipalities may use the technology to augment community holiday celebrations, such as winter holiday festivals or Forth of July events. Halloween and the Day of the Dead events are a great starting place because of the way they blur lines in much the same way that Chicago Projection Mapping is using technology to augment realities.
