CompuHigh Offers a Test-Free Alternative to Students with Test Anxiety

Most students feel nervous about taking tests, but 16-20% of students experience “test anxiety,” according to the American Test Anxiety Association. Test anxiety can be so overwhelming it actually shuts down recall of information that a student really knows. For these students, school becomes a minefield of failure and discouragement, especially as tests gain higher and higher stakes for individual students and schools.

CompuHigh Online High School is an alternative for students whose potential is not met by traditional schools. CompuHigh’s mission is “to provide a supportive, challenging, alternate learning environment.” According to Principal Stan Kanner, a cornerstone of this mission is the belief that tests, especially high pressure tests, do not measure students’ true capability. CompuHigh has always been committed to providing a ‘test-free’ environment to most students. This despite a trend in U.S. education toward more and more high-stakes standardized testing. As the spring testing season approaches, CompuHigh is offering free transcript evaluations for families who are interested in a test-free alternative to their public high school. Students and schools across the United States begin to feel anxiety each spring about whether a few hours of testing can measure their yearlong performance. Many students and teachers report harsh disciplinary measures becoming more common as this shared anxiety mounts. Studies have shown that adopting high stakes testing has had several negative consequences including increasing the school drop-out rate. CompuHigh has open enrollment and accepts students without regard to their past disciplinary record.

CompuHigh uses a Mastery Learning model to make sure students meet learning standards without the need for testing. Teachers at CompuHigh work one-on-one with each student on each lesson. Teachers identify gaps in a student’s understanding of a lesson, then provide additional resources and tutoring to help that student fill in the gaps. Students then correct their assignments or answer additional questions until the teacher sees that mastery of the lesson has been achieved.

“Mastery Learning is a very powerful technique,” says Lead Guidance Counselor Marianne O’Doherty. “Not only do students have the opportunity to truly learn to their full potential, they also begin to change the way they think about school and learning. It’s not so threatening any more; it’s not just a set-up for failure. Students begin to gain confidence in themselves and even regain that curiosity that drives life-long learning.”

According to CompuHigh’s academic policies, there are exceptions in which proctored final exams are required. Student athletes who require NCAA approved core credits must take a proctored final exam to fulfill NCAA requirements. Also a final proctored exam could be required if a student has or is suspected to have cheated.
