Disabled Veterans National Foundation Calls for Greater Support to Speed Up Claims Process for Disabled Veterans

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 30, 2012

The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (, a non-profit veterans service organization that focuses on helping men and women who serve and return home wounded or sick after defending our safety and our freedom, is calling for broader support of Veterans Services Officers (VSO’s) who are working to try to reduce the increasingly long waits veterans are facing when they make disability claims. At a recent Congressional House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Hearing, VSO’s expressed concerns that due to an increasing workload due to changing VA policies, higher denial rates and other factors are starting to hurt the system’s ability to provide adequate disability benefits to veterans in a timely manner.

According to the hearing and other experts, VA claims processors often are not trained or equipped to handle the mounting crisis of nearly 900,000 backlogged claims- over 65 percent of them pending more than 165 days. Part of DVNF’s founding mission is to support and help veterans and veterans service groups get the support disabled veterans need and deserve after serving the nation and sacrificing so much. DVNF, The American Legion and other VSO’s are supportive of VA recent initiatives such as the Fully Developed Claims Initiative (FDC) which aims to process claims within 90 days of their receipt. The American Legion has suggested to the VA to; hire more veterans to handle claims and make better training a priority as ways to speed up claims processing.

“So many of our veterans need help in so many ways, and to make them wait almost half a year for a disability claim is so damaging not only to veterans but to our whole system of helping veterans who deserve and need help,” said Raegan Rivers, Chief Administrative Officer of DVNF. “If veterans with real disabilities from their service are not getting help fast enough, the real costs of this claims problem rises for our society at large.”
