Tips on finding IT networking groups such as Her Domain, a professional women-only job-networking organization based in Austin, TX.
Dear Molly: I’m a woman currently employed in the IT field and am looking for another job that’s a step or two up from where I am today. I know that networking (the human kind, not the computer kind) can be a really effective way to find a job. I have heard of an organization in Texas called HerDomain that is an online networking organization. Could you tell me more about what this group does and how I can find out if one like it exists in my area?
Molly says: Networking is an excellent way to find an IT job. Her Domain is a networking organization for women in IT who also live in the Austin, TX area. According to the organization’s mission statement, Her Domain hopes “to encourage and support women who embrace the culture and technology of the Internet as a vehicle for creative and professional pursuits.”
Even the “Other Groups” section of Her Domain’s Web site concentrates mostly on Texas-based groups, but it should be easy enough to find other professional organizations similar to Her Domain in your area. If you search the Web for IT or computer professional organizations, you should come up with a few. Check with them to see if they have a chapter in your area.
There are also a few national organizations listed on the Her Domain Web site such as NOW, Webgrrls and WITI, so follow those links to see if they have a chapter in your area or if you could help start one. If you’re really impressed with Her Domain, you might want to contact someone at Her Domain about starting a branch of that organization in your area.
