GMV Launches Software to Expand Blackberry E-mail Capability

GMV Launches Atlas- A New Software Solution That Enables Linux E-Mail Users To Use BLACKBERRY Madrid–GMV, a multinational company headquartered in Spain, announces the launch of atlas GMV ―a new software solution that enables the use of Blackberry Smartphone’s to access open source email based on Linux.

atlas GMV has been designed as a complement to the mobile email solution provided by Research In Motion, which currently supports Microsoft, Lotus and Novell mail architectures only.

Installing atlas GMV together with the Blackberry Enterprise Server gives Linux email users access to push email and synchronization of PIM (Personal Information Management) objects such as contacts and appointments, through their Blackberry Smartphone’s.

Up until now access to push email on BlackBerry Smartphone’s has been limited by the organization’s email architecture, since it was necessary to have a solution based on Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino or Novell GroupWise. With atlas GMV, access to push email and information such as contacts, tasks and appointments through the BlackBerry Smartphone is extended to standard SMTP/IMAP4 email architectures, including those based on open source software and Linux operating system.

atlas GMV requires installation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange on a server running Microsoft’s Windows operating system but does not require the installation of an Exchange email server. atlas GMV is installed and run in the same server as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and functions as a connector between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the corporate email server. atlas GMV connects to the email server using the standard protocols SMTP and IMAP4, and uses the IMAP IDLE extension for push email. Therefore, any email server that supports these standard interfaces is suitable for integration using atlas GMV (including but not limited to open source and Linux email servers). atlas GMV provides synchronization of PIM objects through the SyncML (Synchronization Markup Language) standard of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).
