Helping Agencies Measure Security Posture and Establish Meaningful Cybersecurity Performance Goals

Meet Alma R. Cole, The Performance Institute’s 2014 Fellow

The Performance Institute (PI) is very proud to announce Alma R. Cole as a 2014 Performance Fellow. Cole, a senior leader with vast experience managing cybersecurity organizations within the Department of Homeland Security, is named as PI’s Cybersecurity Fellow.

“Given our dependence on technology at no time has cybersecurity been more important or more in the headlines; however, organizations continue to struggle to understand and manage cyber risk. The dynamic nature of cyber threats and vulnerabilities require ongoing adaptation of defenses. The best of breed technologies should be combined with processes and procedures which are optimized for each individual organization so that cyber risk management activities are integrated into the lifeblood of the organization,” says Cole.

PI Fellows provide thought leadership, strategic direction, and hands-on expertise in expanding the Institute’s work; advancing its mission to meet the critical issues and challenges facing organizations and governments.

“Mr. Cole supports and participates in the Council on Cyber Security,” explains PI’s Executive Director, Bruce Anich. “ He is a key participant on the panel that was responsible for updating the Critical Security Controls and helped to facilitate sessions with The Performance Institute. We at PI are extremely excited to have Mr. Cole help us support the use of the Critical Security Controls as a Framework Profile to support organizations that are adopting the National Institute of Standards and Technology Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity.”

Cole, who served as the Chief Systems Security Officer for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Department of Homeland Security, says, “I am extremely honored to join PI as a 2014 fellow. Recent years have seen an alarming rise in cyber threat activity designed to disrupt our country’s critical infrastructure and steal sensitive information from both the U.S. government and private sector. My goal is to help organizations address these challenges with an effective and comprehensive cyber strategy and develop strategic priorities and architectures to provide resiliency against cyber attacks and espionage.”
