IMC, Inc. Helps Executive Agencies Comply With Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Order by Analyzing and Deploying Department-Wide Records Management Systems

RESTON, Va. Feb. 23, 2011 November 4, 2010 Barack Obama

According to the Executive Order, "Executive departments and agencies employ ad hoc, agency-specific policies, procedures, and markings to safeguard and control this information, such as information that involves privacy, security, proprietary business interests, and law enforcement investigations. This inefficient, confusing patchwork has resulted in inconsistent marking and safeguarding of documents, led to unclear or unnecessarily restrictive dissemination policies, and created impediments to authorized information sharing." To address these problems, EA 13556 establishes a program for managing this information described as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and emphasizes the openness and uniformity of government-wide practice.

Agencies will be required to establish their current CUI categories and sub-categories and submit them for review to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) within 180 days. NARA will compile a standard catalog of CUI categories and work with each Executive Department to develop a compliance plan.

IMC, Inc. has a number of technologies to assist Executive Departments in compliance with this directive.  IMC’s Electronic Records Inventory Management (eRIM™) system utilizes highly intelligent automated classification technologies that can enable agencies to establish their CUI categories and sub-categories in the early phases of the process.
