The Voice Activity Detection (VAD) and Comfort Noise Generator (CNG) algorithms allow discontinuous transmission and the insertion of an artificial noise during silent intervals of speech.
This avoids noise modulation that would otherwise be present. If the background acoustic noise is present during active periods of speech abruptly disappears, noise modulation may reduce the intelligibility of the speech. The function of the Voice Activity Detector is to reliably detect the presence or absence of speech and to convey this information to the CNG algorithm.
The Comfort Noise Generator algorithm is designed to generate noise that matches the actual background noise while keeping the global transmission cost as low as possible.
