Looking good

Rescue those vacation photos.

Summer vacation season is fast approaching, but your slide projector broke ten years ago and it’s sitting in your garage. Come on–it’s time you do something cool with your summer pictures, even if it means slide shows on a monitor instead of a wall.

SimpleImageX 3.3.5, by Ellipse Software can help put together that sleek slide show, and organize your images and movies. It saves everything in browsers with large picture thumbnails so you’ll always know which files to open. You can also assign each image a keyword so you’re not milling through handfuls of folders. SimpleImage costs $25 and requires OS X.

For that moment you wish you had a camera, but you do have a video camera, Evological Software introduces ImageDV, 1.2, a simple utility to extract digital images from DV video on FireWire DV cameras or from DV video clips. The images can be pulled, interlaced, and saved in the most popular image formats, for Web and desktop publishing. The program is compatible with OS 8.5 and higher, and available for $30 after a 15-day trial.

The new version of GraphicConverter from Lemke Software can support more than 140 formats and export 40 formats for image editing. It has complete compatibility with Photoshop plugins, batch conversion capabilities, extensive editing tools, and a slideshow application. While it’s not the standard for image-editing programs, for $30, you certainly get what you pay for. Get Converter Classic for OS 7.1 or higher, or Converter 4.5.4 for OS X.

No image-editing column would be complete without mentioning iPhoto 2, Apple’s new OS X version for easy image manipulation. The free downloadable program is good for extracting images from your digital camera and cataloging them automatically. The program’s image-editing is somewhat limited, although blemishes can be eliminated with the Retouch brush.

Getting your photos on the Web can be arduous and tedious, but JAlbum promises to do much of the dirty work for you. Drop a folder containing image and movie files onto JAlbum and press “Make album,” and this freeware program (for all platforms) will create thumbnails of your images and display them in HTML index pages. You can have JAlbum produce a slideshow of your images for easy navigation. It can also create a hierarchy of image folders. JAlbum supports JPEG, GIF and PNG image files and popular movie formats like .avi, .mpg, and .wm.
