According to Sanders, "Step one is to really get in touch with your customers and find out their emotional mood. Are they pulling back the purse strings? If so, why? What are they still spending money on? Is there a segment or portion of your demographic that is continuing to spend money on purchases in your product category?"

"Step two," said Sanders, "is to create bright, targeted promotions that allay the fears of consumers and give them bargains. They key in a recession is to lower your prices. In good times, increase your prices."

Sanders stated, "The third step is to craft a sales message in the form of a sales letter, teleseminar, blog post, postcard or traditional sales letter that makes a very attractive offer to the customer and calms their fears."

To close things out, Sanders offered this advice, "In this recession, you can either draw back or market smarter and harder. The companies that survive will focus on marketing value-based offers, deals and packages. This is the path to follow."
