Company fills high-speed Internet needs.

Finding the right Internet Service Provider is tough work. Finding a reliable ISP that can provide hassle-free installation of affordable high-speed Internet access can be even tougher. But Long Island-based Optimum Online is trying to change all that, offering residents self-installing cable modem access at prices lower than many dial-up or DSL providers. We recently spoke with Gemma Toner, senior vice president at Optimum Online, about the company’s growing success.

What does Optimum Online do?

Optimum Online is the high-speed Internet solution for the home offered by Cablevision Systems Corp. Optimum Online is available in many parts of Long Island, Connecticut, New York City, Westchester, and New Jersey, and is the most affordable and best performing high-speed Internet service in the New York metropolitan area. We ended 2001 with a total of more than 507,000 subscribers, averaging approximately 5,000 new customers signing on each week. We have the highest market penetration in the industry at 17 percent.

What do you think sets Optimum Online apart from the many other ISPs in these areas?

Optimum Online is the fastest-growing residential cable modem service in the New York metropolitan area. That’s because we offer speeds up to 100 times faster than any dial-up service and up to four times faster than DSL. We’ve consistently received the highest ratings on DSLReports.com, an industry Web site that tracks ISPs. Optimum offers downstream bandwidth of up to 10Mbps and upstream of up to 1Mbps. No other service in the area offers similar residential connection speeds.

One of the biggest bonuses of using our service, though, is that customers have an always-on connection. There’s no dial-up stress, and using the Internet doesn’t tie up the phone line. We’re also the first high-speed provider to offer consumers a self-install cable modem option that’s available in a retail setting. Most of our customers choose to self-install-and it’s easy, they don’t need to have any prior technical knowledge.

What kinds of promotions does Optimum Online offer potential customers?

Optimum Online regularly offers consumers in the New York metro area the best deals through creative promotions. In addition to the improvements to our network and infrastructure, we plan to launch several new features and specials at various intervals throughout the year. And they’ve been very successful in the past–during the 2001 holiday season, demand for Optimum Online was so high that the Holiday Gift Box, which included a high-speed digital cable modem, a network interface card, a self-installation kit, and one full-year of our service, exceeded sales expectations by more than 80 percent.

What types of things have you done to remain successful in a difficult economy?

Speed, reliability, and price continue to drive consumer demand for our service. For consumers affected by changes in the economy or workplace adjustment-working from home and/or telecommuting-Optimum Online offers an ideal solution, since customers are able to take care of business without tying up a phone line.

What’s next from Optimum Online?

We will continue to invest in our infrastructure and roll out our service to more and more residents in the New York metro area. The company is committed to continually expanding Optimum Online’s service area to meet customer demand. We also have plans to offer new product features throughout the year.

We’ve also relaunched our OptOnline.net, a broadband portal for our subscribers. The site has a new navigational layout and design, and more broadband content and features. It’s a great way for our customers to enjoy the best in broadband content, applications, and localized programming right at their fingertips.
